Diversification Analysis & Findings
Category Breakdown
This part of the analysis takes a look at broad categories like Domestic Funds, Fixed Income Funds, and International, and breaks down the investment choices within each group. Generally speaking, the more variety available within each category, the better the chances of being able to build a broadly diversified portfolio.

Breaking down the investment options in the plan by category and sub-category can provide insight into what ‘gaps’ may exist within the plan. For example, your plan may have several domestic US funds available for investment, but what if a majority of them are large-cap? That could mean the plan is lacking in small and mid-cap options. The same diversification options should apply across all categories.
Diversification Analysis
The result of the A.I.’s review is presented as a single number - a Diversification Score® (DivScore®) that indicates how well your portfolio is diversified. DivScore® is calibrated similarly to your Credit Score - from 400 to 850. A high DivScore® may indicate that your asset allocation accurately reflects your financial situation and investment objectives, while a low DivScore® means you may want to consider adjusting your portfolio. The following tables represent hypothetical portfolios with four different ranges Less than $25K, $25K - $100K, $100K - $1M, and $1M+. Each Table represents combination of different risk tolerances and time horizons. Inside of each cell, one can see if a portfolio with these dollar amount, risk tolerance, and time horizon has an adequate selection of funds required for diversification.

Fees and Expenses
Fees and expenses are an important consideration when investing. Not all expenses are inherently bad - the manager may be worth the cost. At the same time, expenses dig into your total return, so it is important to be aware of how much you’re paying and whether the fees are worth it. Below, the A.I. takes a look at the expense ratios and other fees associated with the holdings in your portfolio.
Expense Ratio | Ticker | Name | Group | Fund Family | No Load |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
0.46 % | BlackRock Core Bond K | Fixed Income Funds | BlackRock | NO | |
1.05 % | Multi-Manager Small Cap Eq Strat Inst | Domestic Stock Funds | Columbia | NO | |
0.52 % | Dodge & Cox Stock | Domestic Stock Funds | Dodge & Cox | YES | |

0.70 % | Dupree NC Tax-Free Income | Fixed Income Funds | Dupree | YES | |
0.78 % | T. Rowe Price Value | Domestic Stock Funds | T. Rowe Price | YES |

Minimizing fees where possible can boost total returns over time. When choosing investments for your 401(k) plan, make the expense ratio and associated fees part of the consideration process.
Fundamentals
A stock/bond/mutual fund or any other type of security’s fundamentals largely determine whether or not it makes sense to own it. Most investors leave it up to professional analysts and advisors to do this type of grunt work - but in this case Tickeron’s A.I. does it. The A.I. details fundamentals for each security held in the 401(k) plan. This analysis gives the plan administrator and plan participants a sense of the company or funds’ revenue, manager tenure, P/E ratio (valuation), risk, and other key metrics. Taking a closer look at the fundamentals of each security can help investors determine if any of the securities are potentially overvalued, too costly, falling short on dividend yields, too risky, too big or small, and so on. Tickeron performs the difficult work of analyzing each security in the plan and breaking down its fundamentals in an easy-to-understand format.
Methodologies and Limitations
The purpose of this report is to provide an Artificial Intelligence-driven analysis of 1 SOURCE 401K PLAN. To conduct the analysis, the A.I. uses a patented methodology developed by Tickeron, known as Diversification Score®:
Diversification Score® and Methodology
Diversification Score® (DivScore) is a metric Tickeron created to measure an investment portfolio’s diversification (or potential for diversification) on a scale of 400 (poorly diversified) to 850 (well diversified).
Much like a Credit Score measures a person's creditworthiness based on financial history, a Diversification Score measures how effectively a portfolio can be diversified based on certain parameters. In the case of 401(k) plans, the Diversification Score is calculated based on a sampling of hypothetical employees’ investment objectives, risk tolerances, portfolio values, years until withdrawal, and available investment options in the 401(k) plan (amongst other factors).
The technology behind Diversification Score involves a sophisticated algorithm that measures factors like asset class, sharpe ratio, correlations, and more.
DivScore is calculated in 3 Steps :
- Step 1: Determine selection quality
- Selection Quality is calculated on a scale of 0 - 100%. An optimal Selection Quality would be rated 100%.
- Tickeron’s Selection Quality algorithm is designed to analyze the investment options available in the 401(k) plan, to determine if an investor has the ability to select an optimal mix of investments relative to his/her investment objectives, risk tolerance, portfolio value, and other factors. The algorithm will also determine if the investor can select an adequate mix of non-correlated assets.
- Step 2: Determine Allocation Quality
- Allocation Quality on a scale of 0-100%. An optimal Allocation Quality would be rated 100%.
- The Allocation Quality algorithm analyzes what percentage an investor has allocated to each position in his/her portfolio. An investor, for example, can have 100% Selection Quality if she has made good investment choices, but can have a poor Allocation Quality score if she has allocated the wrong percentages to each position.
- Step 3: Calculate DivScore
- Once the Selection Quality and Allocation Quality scores have been calculated, the algorithm will merge the data to calculate the DivScore on a scale of 400 to 850. This range is very similar to a credit score. For example, a Divscore of 750 would indicate that the portfolio is well diversified, just as a credit score of 750 indicates excellent creditworthiness and low risk of default.
Limitations
Diversification Score® is not meant to provide a definitive measure of how well a portfolio is diversified. It is designed to give investors and 401(k) administrators a better understanding of how well an investment portfolio can be diversified given the investment options available. If an investor has already created a portfolio, Diversification Score can give him/her guidance as to whether a portfolio is poorly diversified and needs work, or whether the portfolio is well-diversified and the investor is on the right track
