Invesco Mortgage Capital (IVR) and MFA Financial (MFA) are REITs which have historically invested in residential and commercial real estate, in large part through mortgage backed securities, most of which have been backed by federal agencies. Both companies offloaded significant amounts of mortgage-backed securities to hedge against the effects of Covid-19. MFA almost completely liquidated their MBS and CRT holdings, such that approximately 75% of their assets were residential whole loans at the end of the year, and they have stated that they intend to maintain this investment strategy going forward. IVR has access to the research and experience of the rest of Invesco, an S&P 500 company, but MFA is a larger REIT with a market cap of $2B, compared to IVR’s $1B.
