Freshpet, a leader in refrigerated fresh pet food, has spent years posting category-leading growth. That backdrop makes its third quarter 2026 report a key test of whether the company can keep expanding while protecting profitability in a tougher consumer and competitive environment. The prior-year quarter included a one-time $77.9 million deferred tax benefit, which distorts simple year-over-year profit comparisons. As a result, investors focused on underlying metrics such as volume growth, gross margin, and adjusted EBITDA to judge the health of the business. With fresh-pet-food rivals gaining shelf space and inflation pressuring ingredient and packaging costs, this quarter offers a clearer read on Freshpet's ability to sustain its growth algorithm. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Freshpet posted third quarter 2026 net sales of $317.8 million, up 10.0% from $288.8 million a year earlier, exceeding consensus estimates. Growth was entirely volume-driven. GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) net income was $29.7 million, or $0.58 per diluted share, down from $101.7 million a year ago — a decline driven by the absence of last year's $77.9 million deferred income tax benefit rather than any operational weakness.
Profitability was the standout. Gross margin expanded to 44.5% from 39.5%, and adjusted gross margin reached 50.0%, the highest in more than seven years. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $64.5 million from $54.6 million, lifting the adjusted EBITDA margin to 20.3% from 18.9%. The company attributed the improvement to better plant leverage, reduced quality costs, and lower input costs, with only a limited benefit so far from its new bag production technology.
Despite beating estimates and raising guidance, Freshpet shares slipped on the day of the report, reflecting investor unease about slowing top-line momentum. Sales growth of 10.0% marked a second consecutive quarterly deceleration, down from 15.5% in the second quarter of 2026. Management attributed part of the gap between reported sales and stronger measured consumption to a difficult club-channel comparison and a major customer running leaner inventory. Meanwhile, elevated short interest and a focus on the company's softer 2027 margin commentary tempered enthusiasm. The reaction highlights a market weighing impressive margin execution against questions about whether revenue growth can reaccelerate in a more competitive fresh pet food category.
Freshpet raised its fiscal 2026 sales guidance to a range of $1.234 billion to $1.245 billion, implying roughly 12%–13% growth, and narrowed its adjusted EBITDA outlook upward to $215 million–$220 million. Capital expenditures were trimmed to $125 million–$150 million, as operating efficiencies unlocked more than $100 million of incremental capacity — roughly equivalent to adding a new production line without the associated spend.
Looking further ahead, management reiterated a 2027 target of at least 49% adjusted gross margin and a 20%–22% adjusted EBITDA margin. However, it now expects to land in the lower half of that EBITDA margin range if inflation does not improve, and it described beef and packaging cost inflation as structural rather than temporary. Selective price increases and productivity initiatives are the planned offsets.
Key items to monitor include the pace of new-bag-technology rollouts, which management expects to contribute roughly 100 basis points of annualized gross margin improvement once fully implemented, and e-commerce momentum, which grew 35% year over year to 16.9% of sales. Distribution expansion, including a rural lifestyle retailer rollout and three-door fridge tests in a major club customer, will also be closely watched as signals of retailer confidence and future volume growth.
