GDXD is an exchange-traded note (ETN), a senior unsecured debt security issued by Bank of Montreal under the REX MicroSectors brand, rather than a fund that directly holds a basket of securities. Launched in December 2020, it seeks to provide three times the inverse of the daily performance of the S-Network MicroSectors Gold Miners Index, before fees and expenses.
Unlike a conventional ETF, the note does not hold gold mining stocks outright. Instead, it obtains leveraged inverse exposure primarily through swap agreements referencing two underlying vehicles: the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which tracks large-cap gold miners, and the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ), which tracks mid-tier and junior producers. In reported portfolio data, these two exposures have accounted for roughly 76% and 24% of the note's notional exposure, respectively. The note carries an annual investor fee of approximately 0.95% and pays no distributions.
This structure makes GDXD a tactical, short-term trading instrument rather than a buy-and-hold investment. Its daily reset means the note is designed to match -3x of the index only over a single trading session, and volatility can erode returns over longer periods. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to compare how the note stacks up against other leveraged products in the sector.
Over the last 30 days, GDXD advanced roughly +35%, rising from approximately $22.52 to approximately $30.52. The move was volatile and trend-driven rather than gradual, punctuated by sharp single-session swings consistent with a leveraged inverse product.
The trailing three-month picture is different. GDXD is down roughly 4% over the quarter, a small net change that obscures extreme path volatility. The note traded near $59 in mid-July, plunged to about $14 by late August as gold miners staged a powerful rally, and has since rebounded toward the $30 level. This illustrates how daily reset and leverage can produce wide swings that are not captured by a simple period-over-period comparison.
The 30-day surge reflects a sharp pullback in gold mining equities, which move inversely to GDXD. Over a comparable period, gold miners fell by double-digit percentages, with the GDX and GDXJ funds both retreating as the sector surrendered much of its summer gains.
Several macro forces drove the reversal. Gold declined below $4,000 per ounce, its first trip under that threshold since mid-year. A firmer U.S. dollar and elevated Treasury yields, with the 10-year yield near multi-decade highs, raised the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets. The Federal Reserve had raised rates in September, and markets priced a meaningful probability of an additional hike, reinforcing headwinds for gold and miners. Above-forecast inflation data added to the hawkish tone.
Sector sentiment also deteriorated. Junior and mid-tier miners underperformed larger, more established producers, a signal investors were turning defensive within the space. Geopolitical headlines related to Middle East tensions and the approach of U.S. midterm elections contributed to the risk-off tone, even though major miners such as Newmont (NEM) continued to report wide profit margins given gold's still-elevated price relative to production costs.
The broader three-month trend reflects two distinct phases. In July and August, gold miners rallied sharply, with sector benchmarks gaining roughly 40% in a single month as gold rebounded from deeply oversold levels toward a late-August peak. That strength drove GDXD sharply lower, from around $59 to about $14.
Since September, the momentum reversed as rising real yields, a stronger dollar, and renewed Fed hawkishness pressured gold and mining stocks. Institutional flows rotated away from the precious-metals complex, and the sector entered a correction that lifted GDXD from its late-August trough. The net result is a quarter that is only modestly negative for GDXD despite enormous interim volatility, underscoring the importance of entry timing for leveraged inverse products.
The direction of GDXD over the coming months will depend heavily on the gold-miner complex and the macro forces driving it. Investors should monitor the Federal Reserve's policy path, particularly any confirmation of additional rate hikes, as well as real yields and the 10-year Treasury yield, which have been primary headwinds for gold. The U.S. dollar's trajectory and incoming inflation data will also matter.
For the underlying miners, gold's ability to hold support near the $4,000 level and whether a deeper retracement unfolds will be central. Sustained central-bank gold buying and geopolitical developments could provide offsetting support. On the company side, cost trends and margin performance among major producers, including Newmont (NEM), will influence sector earnings and sentiment. Finally, holders of GDXD should remain mindful of the structural risks inherent in daily-reset leveraged products, including volatility decay and the potential for returns to diverge from a simple -3x of the index over multi-day periods.
In my research process, Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a useful way to scan for momentum shifts and sector signals across thousands of securities. It combines technical indicators, AI-generated signals, and performance filters that help surface potential opportunities in instruments like GDXD more efficiently than manual checks alone. The platform supports a more systematic view of evolving market conditions for traders focused on leveraged and inverse exposure.
