Madison Air Solutions debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2026, so its third-quarter report serves as an early, closely watched proof point for a newly public company. The business provides indoor air quality and climate solutions — heating, filtration, air movement, and air conditioning — across commercial and residential markets. Its Nortek Data Center Cooling business has become the central growth story, as hyperscale and colocation operators expand capacity to support artificial intelligence workloads. This quarter matters because it tests whether that rapid expansion can translate into earnings and cash flow without eroding profitability, even as investors weigh the cost of scaling a fast-growing but lower-margin segment. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Madison Air reported third quarter of 2026 net sales of $1.127 billion, up 25.4% from $898.4 million a year earlier and ahead of the roughly $1.06 billion consensus. Adjusted EPS of $0.38 topped the approximately $0.30 estimate, while adjusted net income roughly doubled year over year to about $199 million. GAAP EPS was $0.20, reflecting a $52.2 million unrealized derivative loss.
Adjusted EBITDA grew 19%, but the margin narrowed to 26.5% from 28.0% in the prior-year period. The Commercial segment delivered 39% organic net sales growth to $772 million and 24% adjusted EBITDA growth to $200 million, while the Residential segment grew sales 3.2% with an 11.7% increase in segment EBITDA. Year-to-date free cash flow reached $298 million, representing roughly 135% conversion.
Management raised full-year net sales guidance for the second consecutive quarter, to $4.05–$4.125 billion, and set adjusted EBITDA guidance at $1.04–$1.07 billion.
Despite a clean top- and bottom-line beat, MAIR shares fell sharply on the day of the report. Investors appeared to focus on the quality of the growth rather than the headline numbers, as the margin compression tied to the fast-growing data center cooling business overshadowed the raised revenue outlook. The adjusted EBITDA guidance increase was small relative to the jump in sales guidance, implying a lower full-year margin profile. Strong demand indicators — including a record $3.2 billion backlog and a 1.26x book-to-bill ratio — supported the long-term story, but near-term profitability concerns and a large pending acquisition dominated sentiment.
The biggest near-term watch item is margin recovery in data center cooling. Management described a gradual repair rather than a snapback, expecting a few points of margin expansion over the next several quarters as early programs mature and labor hours decline. Supply-chain availability for electrical components remains a key variable in that timeline.
On demand, order growth is cooling from exceptional levels. Orders rose 26% in the third quarter versus 45% in the second, and management expects fourth-quarter orders to decline year over year with a book-to-bill ratio around 1.0. Still, more than 70% of the record backlog now converts in 2027 or later, which extends visibility but pushes some revenue further out.
The larger catalyst is the pending acquisition of ebm-papst, expected to close soon after year-end. The deal would create a combined business with roughly $6.9 billion in sales and expand the addressable market from about $40 billion to more than $70 billion. Management targets $160 million in annual cost synergies exiting year three, while the transaction increases the share count and adds integration risk. Investors will likely track closing timing, synergy execution, and whether leverage trends toward the company's targets.
