Navient has been shifting its focus in recent years from a large federal student loan servicer to a more targeted education-finance and consumer-lending operation centered on the Earnest brand and refinance activities. This transition means each earnings release serves as an important check on whether the newer growth areas can compensate for the ongoing decline in the legacy FFELP portfolio. The third-quarter results carried added significance because they mixed several one-time factors, such as a substantial legacy loan sale and a notable loan-loss provision, with signs that origination activity is picking up. I was watching closely to assess whether credit costs and legacy adjustments would overshadow the positive origination trends.
Navient delivered third-quarter 2026 GAAP earnings per share of $0.16, well above the consensus estimate of $0.10. Total revenue increased 87.6% year over year to $317 million, supported in part by a $162 million benefit from the sale of roughly $750 million in legacy private education loans. Core earnings per share, which exclude certain one-time and fair-value items, stood at $0.03. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to compare performance against peers in the sector.
Net interest income reached $115 million, below the $125 million consensus estimate and down 19% from the prior year. The company took a $227 million provision for loan losses, with $214 million allocated to the consumer lending portfolio, reflecting elevated delinquencies and charge-offs in the legacy private loan book that have persisted longer than anticipated. An additional $1.4 billion of legacy private loans were moved to held-for-sale status, accompanied by a $29 million provision to adjust to fair value. Total expenses declined to $77 million from $109 million a year earlier, and management reaffirmed its target for full-year operating expenses of $350 million or less.
Shares showed little immediate movement after the release, trading near $9.09. The restrained response reflected a quarter that featured solid top-line results and origination growth but was complicated by one-time items, the net interest income shortfall, and the sizable loan-loss provision. Although the earnings-per-share and revenue beats stood out, investors appeared to balance those positives against the $227 million provision and slower improvement in legacy credit metrics, while noting the progress in the refinance and in-school lending segments. The rise in the Adjusted Tangible Equity Ratio and the capital return provided some counterbalance to the credit concerns.
Navient heads into the remainder of 2026 with solid momentum in its growth businesses, though uncertainty lingers around the legacy portfolio. Originations totaled $1.4 billion in the quarter, with graduate in-school originations rising about 170% year over year and a personal loan test program adding $46 million. Management noted that coupon rates on new loans are being adjusted upward to safeguard returns as benchmark rates rise, without signs of demand slowing so far.
On the credit front, attention will turn to whether the increased loan-loss reserve signals a more stable path forward. Management characterized near-term trends as “flat to modestly favorable,” while acknowledging that legacy private loan performance has improved more slowly than previously expected. The pace of additional legacy loan sales and held-for-sale reclassifications will influence both reported revenue and reserve levels. Expense control and capital allocation also merit monitoring, as the company reiterated its full-year operating expense target and returned $25 million to shareholders during the quarter.
In my own review of the quarter, I turned to Tickeron’s AI Screener to quickly filter comparable names in the financial services space and examine technical and fundamental signals alongside the earnings data. This helped confirm how Navient’s origination trends stack up against broader industry patterns without spending hours on manual screens. The tool’s customizable filters make it straightforward to pull together ideas for further analysis when earnings season brings a mix of one-time items and underlying business momentum.
