3M’s latest quarter offers a useful checkpoint on whether its ongoing transformation is delivering sustainable, profitable growth. Following portfolio adjustments and litigation pressures, the focus has been on whether margin gains, product momentum, and efficiency improvements can counter ongoing cost pressures and softer demand in parts of the consumer and electronics markets. The report also highlights the company’s push into data-center optical connectivity, an area with longer-term potential. A profitability beat combined with higher full-year guidance suggests the turnaround strategy is progressing.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, MMM delivered adjusted EPS of $2.50, a 12% rise from the same period last year and ahead of the roughly $2.39 consensus. GAAP diluted EPS increased 70% to $2.63, with net income attributable to common shareholders rising to $1.37 billion from $834 million. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Adjusted sales reached $6.6 billion, up 4.2% year over year on 3.3% adjusted organic growth. Reported sales of $6.58 billion grew 1.0%, with reported organic growth of 0.2%. Adjusted operating margin widened 110 basis points to 26.2%, and reported operating margin improved 150 basis points to 23.7%. Operating cash flow came in at $0.5 billion, while adjusted free cash flow totaled $1.2 billion.
Management raised its full-year 2026 outlook, now targeting adjusted EPS of $9.10 to $9.15 (previously $8.95 to $9.10), adjusted total sales growth above 4.5%, adjusted organic sales growth above 3.5%, adjusted operating cash flow of about $5.9 billion, and adjusted free cash flow of about $4.8 billion.
Shares of MMM rose after the release, closing up about 5.9% near $171.50. The move reflected the earnings beat, the raised guidance, and news of an expanded commercial tie-up with Amazon to deploy 3M’s optical connectivity and other data-center products. The arrangement includes a warrant for Amazon to buy up to 3.2 million shares contingent on reaching $6 billion in cumulative sales over seven years. Investors viewed the results as confirmation that margin and productivity efforts are taking hold, with the Amazon warrant adding weight to the data-center growth narrative.
The main question now is whether MMM can keep adjusted organic growth above 3.5% while sustaining margin expansion. Management highlighted solid order trends and accelerating momentum in general industrial and safety markets in the second half, plus improving conditions in semiconductors and data centers. These are tempered by softness in consumer electronics and U.S. retail inventory trends.
Cost control remains important. The company continues to address stranded costs, tariffs, and oil-related inflation through pricing, savings initiatives, and productivity. Gross margin improved 230 basis points year over year, and further simplification steps, including additional plant closures, are expected to support margins beyond 2027.
Additional areas to watch include the pace of new-product introductions, the ramp in data-center optical connectivity revenue (targeted at roughly $700 million for 2026), the impact of the Madison Fire & Rescue acquisition, and developments in ongoing litigation, especially the AFFF personal injury multidistrict case.
