AdvanSix’s third quarter report offers a clear look at how the company is navigating a period of significant input cost inflation. The vertically integrated chemical producer saw strong pricing across its portfolio, which lifted revenue, but rising sulfur and benzene costs and lower production output at key sites eroded profitability. For investors, the report highlights the tension between commercial execution and operational headwinds, as well as the company’s progress on cash generation and cost discipline. The results also matter because they set the tone heading into the fourth quarter and 2027, when management expects tighter ammonium sulfate supply and potential margin normalization as sulfur costs ease.
AdvanSix posted third quarter 2026 sales of $431 million, a 15% increase from $374.5 million in the prior-year period and modestly above consensus expectations of around $426 million. The top-line gain was driven by 17% favorable pricing, partially offset by a 2% decline in volume. Raw material pass-through pricing rose 10%, while market-based pricing improved 7% across all product lines.
Profitability, however, lagged. The company reported a GAAP net loss of $7.6 million, or ($0.28) per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $2.6 million, or ($0.10) per diluted share, a year earlier. Adjusted diluted EPS was a loss of $0.24, down $0.32 from the prior year and below analyst estimates. Adjusted EBITDA fell to $15 million from roughly $25 million in the year-ago quarter, as a $65 million raw material headwind, led by sulfur and benzene, and reduced production output drove unfavorable fixed cost absorption. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Investor reaction to the report reflected the mixed nature of the results. The revenue beat and improved cash flow were viewed favorably, but the wider-than-expected adjusted EPS loss and margin compression weighed on sentiment. Analysts noted that strong pricing gains were almost entirely offset by raw material inflation, limiting the earnings benefit of the top-line growth. The sequential decline in profitability and cautious commentary about a price-over-raw-material headwind in the fourth quarter added to near-term caution, even as management pointed to improving supply-demand dynamics for ammonium sulfate heading into 2027.
Looking ahead, management anticipates a year-over-year price-over-raw-material headwind in the fourth quarter. Nylon and Chemical Intermediates pricing is expected to help offset rising raw materials, while sulfur costs remain a meaningful drag on Plant Nutrients, particularly given the stage of the fertilizer season. The Tampa sulfur marker moderated from $705 per long ton in the third quarter to $615 in the fourth-quarter settlement, but there is a lag in realized input pricing.
Investors should monitor several factors in the coming quarters. First, sulfur and benzene cost trends will be central to margin recovery, given that every $100 per long ton change in sulfur prices represents an estimated $35 million annualized cost impact. Second, management expects tighter domestic ammonium sulfate supply and improved demand in the first half of 2027, which could support Plant Nutrients volumes. Third, the company is progressing growth initiatives including the SUSTAIN ammonium sulfate project and Project CENTURY, backed by a $47 million USDA FIELDS grant. Finally, the company expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of approximately $90 million and an effective tax rate of about 20%, while its new five-year, $425 million credit facility provides additional financial flexibility.
