Appian’s third-quarter report offers a useful window into how enterprise customers are moving from AI interest to actual spending on software. The company provides a low-code automation platform that helps organizations in financial services, life sciences, and the public sector integrate AI into critical workflows. It positions itself as the layer that makes AI dependable for high-stakes environments, and the latest results suggest this approach is resonating. With cloud subscription revenue picking up pace and net ARR expansion reaching a multi-year peak, the quarter points to durable demand for AI-related software heading into 2027.
Appian delivered one of its strongest quarters for the period ended September 30, 2026. Total revenue rose 25% year over year to $235 million, beating the consensus estimate of roughly $217 million. Cloud subscription revenue grew 20% to $136 million, while total subscription revenue climbed 28% to $188 million. Professional services revenue increased 18% to $47 million.
On the profitability side, non-GAAP diluted earnings per share reached $0.51, ahead of the approximately $0.33 analysts had expected, while GAAP net income was $12.3 million, or $0.17 per diluted share. Adjusted EBITDA hit $43 million, exceeding the company’s guidance of $30 million to $33 million. Cloud net ARR expansion of 120% stood out, up from 112% a year earlier and the highest in more than five years. The company also repurchased about 500,000 shares for $17 million under its buyback program. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Investors responded positively to the results, with shares having already moved higher in the weeks before the report on optimism around the company’s AI positioning. The combination of a top- and bottom-line beat, record cloud net ARR expansion, and an improved full-year outlook strengthened the view that Appian is turning AI interest into faster subscription growth. Strength in the U.S. public sector and growing traction among large, regulated customers stood out, as these accounts tend to be more stable and valuable over time.
For the fourth quarter of 2026, Appian guided cloud subscription revenue between $143 million and $145 million, total revenue between $233 million and $237 million, and adjusted EBITDA between $30 million and $33 million. Non-GAAP earnings per share are expected between $0.30 and $0.34.
For the full year, management now expects cloud subscription revenue of $536 million to $538 million, total revenue of $873 million to $877 million, adjusted EBITDA of $116 million to $119 million, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.20 to $1.24 — an increase from prior targets.
Looking forward, several areas deserve attention. Whether cloud net ARR expansion can hold at elevated levels will show how much existing customers are expanding spend. The path of adjusted EBITDA margins, which management expects to improve by nearly three percentage points this year, is also worth tracking. Foreign exchange headwinds could trim reported growth by two to three percentage points in the fourth quarter. Cash flow remains relevant too, given the outflow tied to collection timing despite solid operating profitability.
