Applied Industrial Technologies is a leading distributor of industrial motion, power, automation, and fluid power products and engineered solutions. Its fiscal year runs from July through June, so the fiscal 2027 first quarter reflects the three months ended September 30, 2026. This report matters because it offers an early read on industrial demand across North America and on whether recent margin momentum can hold against persistent cost inflation. The company has now beaten consensus EPS estimates in eight consecutive quarters, and investors were watching closely to see whether growth in higher-margin Engineered Solutions — automation, fluid power, and flow control — could continue to offset softer trends in the larger Service Center business. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how AIT compares to others in the industry.
For the fiscal 2027 first quarter, Applied Industrial Technologies posted net sales of $1.29 billion, up 7.6% from $1.20 billion in the prior-year period and matching consensus estimates. Diluted EPS was $2.97, ahead of the $2.89 analyst consensus and up from $2.63 a year ago, a roughly 13% increase. Net income rose 9.5% to $110.4 million.
On an organic basis, which excludes the effects of acquisitions and foreign currency, sales grew 7.1%. Gross margin expanded 25 basis points to 30.4%, or nearly 50 basis points excluding the impact of last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory accounting. Adjusted EBITDA — earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization — increased 9.6% to $160.3 million, with an EBITDA margin of 12.4%.
Segment results were mixed. Engineered Solutions delivered a 14.1% sales increase to $475.8 million, with operating profit up 32.8% and EBITDA up 25%. Service Center sales rose 4.2% to $815.3 million, but organic growth moderated to 3.5% from 8% in the prior quarter, partly reflecting softer demand outside the United States.
Despite the earnings beat, Applied Industrial Technologies shares declined following the release, with reports indicating a drop of roughly 8% on the day. The muted-to-negative reaction appears tied to investor concerns about the pace of growth and margin trajectory rather than the headline results themselves. While the company beat EPS expectations and raised guidance, analysts noted that the full-year GAAP EPS midpoint of about $11.95 came in slightly below some estimates, and Service Center margin compression weighed on sentiment. The cautious tone reflects broader uncertainty around tariffs, geopolitical risk, and interest rates, as well as more difficult comparisons expected in the back half of the fiscal year.
Management raised its fiscal 2027 EPS guidance to a range of $11.70 to $12.20, up from $11.65 to $12.15, while reiterating full-year sales growth of 4% to 6.5% and EBITDA margins of 12.5% to 12.8%. For the fiscal second quarter, the company guided to organic sales growth of 6% to 8% and EBITDA margins of 12.3% to 12.5%.
Investors should watch whether the strong order momentum in Engineered Solutions persists. Orders rose more than 30% year over year, and book-to-bill reached its highest level in more than four years, driven by automation, fluid power, and a recovering flow control business. Automation organic sales have now grown more than 20% for two straight quarters, supported by robotics, machine vision, and digital technology demand.
On the cost side, higher LIFO inventory expense and elevated employee health benefit claims pressured margins during the quarter. Management expects these items to normalize, but continued inflation in freight, fleet, and labor costs remains a factor to monitor. Capital allocation is another focus, with the company repurchasing roughly $80 million of stock in the quarter and describing mergers and acquisitions as a top priority for fiscal 2027. From what I see, the order trends here are worth tracking closely in the months ahead.
