Ether has become a core holding in many institutional portfolios, and the arrival of U.S.-listed spot ether ETFs has opened a regulated channel for investors. ETH and ETHW both provide direct exposure by holding the underlying asset and tracking its price. The real distinctions lie in fees, size, liquidity, and the ability to generate yield through staking. These factors matter more for long-term positioning than short-term price fluctuations.
ETH is a passively managed fund launched on July 23, 2024, on NYSE Arca. It aims to track the CoinDesk Ether Price benchmark by holding ether, which makes up 100% of its net assets. With around $2.5 billion in AUM and no portfolio turnover, it functions as a lower-cost version of the larger Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE). Its 0.15% expense ratio is the lowest in the category. A notable feature is its staking program, which has staked more than three-quarters of holdings at times and delivered a net annualized yield of roughly 2.6–2.9% to shareholders. Coinbase Custody handles storage, and rewards adjust the ether-per-share figure over time.
ETHW launched one day earlier on July 22, 2024, also on NYSE Arca and sponsored by Bitwise. It likewise holds ether in cold storage at Coinbase Custody, with Bank of New York Mellon as administrator, and seeks to mirror spot ether prices. The fund charges a 0.20% sponsor fee and holds roughly $270–300 million in AUM. It does not stake its holdings, so investors receive no additional yield. Bitwise publishes proof-of-reserves data and donates 10% of profits to Ethereum development, which may appeal to those who value a crypto-focused issuer. Its smaller size typically means lighter trading volume and slightly wider spreads than larger peers.
These ETFs operate in a fast-evolving segment where the SEC’s mid-2024 approval of spot ether products expanded institutional access. Ether’s role centers on supporting decentralized applications, stablecoins, and tokenized assets, so its performance ties closely to on-chain activity and network developments. Staking yields, regulatory clarity on custody, and broader macro conditions like interest rates and risk sentiment remain important influences. Both products carry the full volatility of ether itself, with no sector diversification.
Because the funds track the same asset with identical holdings, their price movements have stayed closely aligned. The meaningful gaps come from structure. ETH’s five-basis-point fee advantage, combined with staking yield, creates a modest positive carry that can compound and widen net returns in flat markets. Its larger AUM supports tighter spreads and smoother creation/redemption flows, which helps institutional investors. ETHW offers a more specialized, transparent vehicle but trades with less liquidity. Both remain high-beta plays whose appeal ultimately depends on ether’s cyclical drivers.
I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the two ETFs compare on liquidity, fees, and yield metrics within the broader digital-asset space.
In my own research process, I turned to Tickeron’s AI Screener to quickly filter spot ether ETFs by expense ratio, AUM, staking features, and liquidity metrics. The tool helped surface the structural differences between ETH and ETHW in a systematic way and supported a clearer view of their relative positioning without manual data gathering.
