Horizon Technology Finance, a business development company focused on secured venture debt to technology and life sciences companies, is working through an important period after its April 2026 merger with Monroe Capital Corporation. This third quarter represents the first full reporting period for the combined platform, so the results offer a useful test of whether the larger scale can support steady income growth. From my perspective, the report stands out for two main reasons: whether NII is moving back toward better dividend coverage and whether credit quality is holding up after some earlier stress. With a floating-rate loan book and a focus on growth-stage borrowers, the quarter also gives a sense of how venture lending is performing in an environment where funding remains concentrated around larger AI-related names.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, Horizon posted NII of $12.3 million, or $0.19 per basic share. That marked a sequential improvement from $0.11 per share in the second quarter, though it remained below the $0.32 per share recorded a year earlier. NII came in slightly above consensus estimates. Total investment income reached $24.1 million, which was a bit below expectations and down from $26.3 million in the same quarter last year, mainly because of lower interest income from the debt portfolio. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Credit metrics continued to affect the results. The company recorded a net realized loss on investments of $11.3 million, or $0.17 per basic share, along with net unrealized depreciation of $29.1 million, or $0.44 per basic share. As a result, NAV per share dropped to $5.56 from $6.98 at the end of 2025. The dollar-weighted annualized yield on the debt portfolio was 14.7%, down from 18.6% a year earlier, even as onboarding yields improved to 12.6%.
Horizon shares have continued to trade at a meaningful discount to book value, which management has pointed to when explaining its $20 million stock repurchase program. During the quarter the company repurchased just over 2 million shares at an average price of $4.90. Investor attention ahead of the report centered on whether the portfolio could keep expanding while stressed credits showed signs of stabilization. The gap between NII per share and the combined regular and special distributions, together with the NAV decline, kept attention on credit quality rather than the headline income beat. The ongoing rise in rated-4 and rated-5 investments, which point to weaker credit quality and higher risk of principal loss, remains the main factor shaping sentiment.
Looking ahead, the key item to monitor is whether Horizon can limit further losses on its stressed debt positions. Management has stressed active management of these holdings, yet any continued deterioration would add more pressure on NAV per share, which serves as a central valuation anchor for BDCs. On the positive side, the 14% sequential rise in the committed, approved, and awarded backlog to $351 million points to a stronger origination pipeline. With roughly $210.9 million in available liquidity and net leverage at 82% against a 120% target, the company still has room to put capital to work in new income-producing loans that could support future NII and distributions.
Investors will also want to keep an eye on the broader venture capital environment. Funding remains heavily tilted toward large artificial intelligence companies, which leaves the exit market for most technology and life sciences firms relatively quiet. That backdrop could affect both prepayment activity and the credit performance of Horizon’s portfolio companies in coming quarters. Distribution sustainability will stay in focus as well. With quarterly distributions still above current NII per share, the company’s ability to draw on spillover income, steadily rebuild earnings power, and benefit from the advisor’s fee waiver and any additional share repurchases will be watched closely.
In my own process I often rely on Tickeron’s AI Screener to quickly filter opportunities and compare names like HRZN against peers using technical patterns, fundamentals, and AI signals. It helps surface ideas more efficiently than manual screening and supports a more structured approach to tracking BDC holdings alongside broader watchlists. The tool has become a regular part of how I review sector positioning and identify potential trade candidates without spending hours on spreadsheets.
