The iShares MSCI Indonesia ETF is a passively managed, single-country exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the MSCI Indonesia Investable Market Index. This free-float-adjusted, market-capitalization-weighted benchmark covers large-, mid-, and small-capitalization Indonesian equities. Launched in 2010 and issued by BlackRock, the fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.59% and holds roughly 82 to 83 securities, with total assets under management of approximately $385 million.
Portfolio exposure is heavily concentrated in financials, which represent roughly 45% to 50% of assets. Materials, communication services, energy, consumer staples, and industrials follow at materially smaller weights. The largest positions are Indonesia's dominant banks — Bank Central Asia (about 21%), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (about 13%), and Bank Mandiri (about 10%) — alongside Telkom Indonesia, Astra International, and Bank Negara Indonesia, each near the low single digits. This bank-centric, single-country structure means EIDO's performance is highly sensitive to Indonesia's financial sector, the rupiah, and foreign capital flows.
Over the last 30 days, EIDO declined approximately 15%, from a close near $11.86 to $10.07. The move was not gradual: the fund dropped sharply in mid-October before stabilizing and trading in a volatile, lower range into early November. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the ETF compares to others in the region.
The quarterly trend is more pronounced. From roughly $12.91 in early August to $10.07, EIDO has lost about 22%, after peaking near $13.22 in early September. In short, the ETF trended higher through late summer, rolled over, and then broke down decisively once the market-classification risk surfaced.
The dominant driver was index-provider MSCI's announcement that it is consulting on whether to reclassify Indonesia from emerging-market to standalone status, citing concerns over opaque share ownership, suspected coordinated trading, and regulatory enforcement. The announcement triggered the steepest one-day plunge in the Jakarta Composite Index in decades, and EIDO's bank-heavy portfolio absorbed the brunt of the selling.
Because Bank Central Asia, Bank Rakyat Indonesia, and Bank Mandiri together account for more than 40% of the fund, weakness in large-cap banks translated directly into ETF performance. Broader macro pressures compounded the move: the rupiah weakened toward Rp 18,000 per U.S. dollar, foreign investors continued a record year of net equity outflows, and crude oil prices above $100 per barrel raised fiscal-subsidy and current-account concerns.
The three-month decline reflects a shift from constructive conditions into a full risk-reassessment of Indonesian assets. Through late summer, EIDO benefited from stabilizing rupiah dynamics and resilient domestic growth, reaching a high near $13.22 in early September. That momentum faded as foreign capital outflows accelerated and government spending commitments raised fiscal scrutiny.
The quarter's defining theme was the deterioration in investor confidence over market integrity and investability. Sustained institutional selling, currency depreciation, and rising government bond yields created a negative feedback loop. Stronger-than-expected third-quarter GDP growth of about 5.47% year-over-year and a stable trade surplus provided some support, but were not enough to offset the classification risk.
The most important factor ahead is MSCI's classification review, with a final decision expected on or before June 30, 2027. A downgrade to standalone status could prompt billions of dollars in additional passive outflows, while a retention of emerging-market status would likely ease selling pressure. Investors should also monitor the rupiah, Bank Indonesia's policy stance, and the pace of foreign net flows into Indonesian equities.
On the domestic front, fiscal discipline, energy-subsidy costs tied to oil prices, and the government's market-reform agenda will shape sentiment. The trajectory of large-cap bank earnings and credit quality remains central given the fund's heavy financials weighting. Global monetary policy, particularly the U.S. Federal Reserve's rate path, will influence the dollar, the rupiah, and risk appetite for emerging-market assets.
In my own analysis, I frequently turn to Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan for comparable single-country ETFs and spot shifting market leadership. It combines technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, and AI signals to surface ideas more efficiently than manual screens alone. This helps add a systematic layer when evaluating funds like EIDO amid evolving conditions.
