Lightspeed Commerce, the unified commerce platform serving retail, hospitality, and golf businesses in more than 100 countries, continues a multiyear shift toward profitability, stronger cash flow, and greater emphasis on its highest-growth markets. This quarter provides a useful checkpoint on whether those efforts are producing lasting improvements in gross profit and payment penetration, even with reported revenue figures affected by the prior divestiture of the Upserve business. For investors, the numbers also offer insight into progress toward the company's stated three-year targets for gross profit, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted free cash flow.
For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, ended September 30, 2026, Lightspeed posted total revenue of $323.8 million, compared with $319.0 million a year earlier. On an organic basis that excludes the divested Upserve business, revenue increased 15%, matching the upper end of the 12% to 16% guidance range. Subscription revenue rose to $97.8 million from $93.5 million, transaction-based revenue reached $213.9 million, and hardware and other revenue increased to $12.2 million from $9.7 million. I also checked comparable industry metrics using Tickeron’s AI Screener to place these figures in broader context.
The company recorded a net loss of $4.2 million, or $0.03 per diluted share, versus a net loss of $32.7 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.17, up from $0.16. Gross profit grew 11% organically to $142.8 million, with an overall gross margin of 44%. Subscription gross margin improved to 84% from 82%, and Lightspeed Capital revenue reached $15.0 million, up 42% organically. Management kept its fiscal 2027 outlook intact and continues to expect meaningful growth in adjusted free cash flow from the $18.2 million recorded in fiscal 2026, in line with the $95 million target for fiscal 2028.
Heading into the report, investor attention centered on profitability and cash-flow progress given the company's cost-reduction initiatives. The results reflected clear bottom-line improvement, including a narrower net loss, higher adjusted profit, and positive adjusted free cash flow, together with faster organic revenue growth in the targeted growth engines. The modest reported year-over-year revenue increase of about 2% stems from the Upserve divestiture and can obscure underlying momentum. After the release, shares faced some pressure in early trading as the market balanced the strong organic performance and profitability path against the softer reported top line and a slight sequential dip in adjusted EBITDA.
Looking ahead, attention will focus on whether Lightspeed can maintain payment penetration gains and software revenue acceleration in its North American retail and European hospitality segments. Those growth engines now account for 77% of revenue, and management has indicated plans to continue shifting the mix toward these higher-growth, higher-margin areas. Any further rise in payments adoption—GPV as a percentage of GTV moved to 45% from 40% a year earlier—would support both revenue and gross margin expansion. Cost discipline remains important as well. Additional reorganization and cost-reduction steps taken after the quarter are expected to support profitability and free cash flow in the second half of the fiscal year. Hardware margins, while still negative, improved sequentially and will serve as another indicator of operating leverage. Broader economic conditions, including inflation, interest rates, and consumer spending trends affecting small and medium-sized businesses, will also influence same-store sales and new customer growth.
