Investors scanning the artificial intelligence theme are moving past the biggest chip names to look at companies further down the infrastructure chain. Nokia (NOK) and Intel (INTC) offer two different routes into that story. Nokia, the Finnish network-equipment provider, is focused on AI-native networks and the upcoming 6G cycle. Intel, the American chipmaker, is working through a turnaround built on data-center processors and a refreshed foundry operation. This comparison looks at how each has performed, where they fit in the market, and what risks they carry for investors considering these contrasting AI-driven recovery paths.
Nokia (NOK) supplies mobile, fixed, and cloud network infrastructure plus optical and IP routing gear. Management has restructured around what it describes as an “AI supercycle,” tightening its reporting lines and concentrating on AI-native mobile networks and 6G. A key development came in late 2025 when Nvidia announced an approximately $1 billion equity investment and a partnership with Nokia on AI-driven radio access networks. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Performance has been solid. Nokia has roughly doubled over the past 12 months and climbed more than 50% year to date, reaching levels last seen roughly a decade ago. In the most recent quarter, net sales rose about 9%, revenue from AI and cloud customers nearly doubled, and order intake grew noticeably. Momentum has eased lately, however, with shares consolidating below the 52-week high. The company has also continued to streamline its portfolio, including an agreement to sell its Enterprise Campus Edge business, as it directs resources toward priority growth areas.
Intel (INTC) designs and produces CPUs for PCs and servers while developing Intel Foundry as a contract manufacturing business. Under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, the focus has been on data-center AI demand and improving manufacturing. Recent results showed revenue up 25% year over year, with the Data Center and AI segment expanding about 59% and non-GAAP gross margin rising sharply to roughly 42%. The U.S. government also acquired an approximately 10% equity stake in late 2025, highlighting the company’s strategic role.
Despite operational progress, the share price has fluctuated. The stock rose more than 150% year to date before retreating from its September high in recent weeks, even after what many viewed as a strong quarter. Attention remains on elevated capital spending, negative adjusted free cash flow, and ongoing operating losses in the foundry segment, which offset some of the positive momentum in the core business.
The two companies sit at different points in the technology stack, which influences their growth drivers and exposures. Nokia’s revenue depends on carrier and cloud spending tied to optical networking, IP routing, and radio equipment, with its case resting on AI data-center connectivity and the eventual 6G cycle. Intel combines chip design and manufacturing, and its recovery depends on Xeon demand for AI inference and agentic workloads as well as the long-term success of its foundry strategy.
Market expectations are high for both. Nokia trades at a price-to-earnings ratio well above its historical average, reflecting optimism around AI-related orders. Intel trades at a forward earnings multiple well above the broader semiconductor group and faces questions about capital intensity and negative adjusted free cash flow. Nokia’s main risks involve order variability and competition from Ericsson and Cisco, while Intel’s center on execution in advanced manufacturing and attracting outside foundry customers.
