O-I Glass is one of the world's largest producers of glass bottles and jars, serving major food and beverage brands across roughly 61 plants in 18 countries. Its results are closely watched as a gauge of global consumer-packaging demand and of cost pressures in energy, freight, and raw materials. The third-quarter report carries extra weight because it reveals whether the company's Americas business can hold up while its European operations recover from weak pricing and elevated costs. With the company already guiding toward a sharply lower full-year outlook, this release gives investors a clearer read on demand trends, cash generation, and the progress of its Fit to Win restructuring program heading into 2027.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, O-I Glass reported net sales of $1.623 billion, down from $1.653 billion a year earlier and below the consensus estimate of roughly $1.65 billion. Net loss attributable to the company was $13 million, or $0.08 per share, compared with net earnings of $30 million, or $0.19 per share, in the prior-year period. On an adjusted (non-GAAP) basis, the company posted a loss of $15 million, or $0.09 per share, versus adjusted earnings of $75 million, or $0.48 per share, a year ago.
Adjusted EBITDA declined to $234 million from $329 million in the prior-year quarter. Results were split sharply by region. Americas net sales rose to $970 million from $940 million, while segment operating profit slipped to $137 million from $140 million. Europe net sales fell to $634 million from $688 million, and segment operating profit collapsed to $2 million from $95 million, reflecting net price pressure, soft demand, and elevated energy and freight costs.
Management also lowered its full-year outlook, now expecting adjusted EBITDA of $925 million to $950 million, down from a prior range of $1,000 million to $1,100 million, and free cash flow use of about $300 million. Liquidity stood at approximately $1.5 billion at quarter-end. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Investor reaction to the report was decidedly negative. O-I Glass shares had closed at $6.43 before the release, already down roughly 10% over the prior three months and about 47% over the trailing 12 months, and the stock traded lower in after-hours activity following the announcement. The combination of an earnings miss, softer-than-expected revenue, and a downgraded full-year outlook reinforced existing concerns about weak European demand and persistent cost inflation. Sentiment heading into the report had already been cautious, and the guidance cut—particularly the shift to meaningful free cash flow use—gave investors little reason to turn constructive in the near term, even as the company pointed to a recovery plan for Europe and continued resilience in the Americas.
Looking ahead, O-I Glass expects higher net sales, adjusted EBITDA, and free cash flow in 2027, supported by improved net pricing, stable sales volumes, and additional Fit to Win cost savings. However, the company said it is no longer maintaining its prior 2027 targets and will provide formal 2027 guidance on its year-end earnings call, given evolving commercial, energy, and global trade conditions.
Investors should monitor several factors over the coming quarters. First, the pace of Europe's recovery will be critical, as the company has laid out a detailed plan focused on commercial performance, energy-cost management, and plant and supply-chain efficiencies. Second, energy and freight cost trends and the potential impact of U.S.-Canada trade disputes remain key swing factors for margins. Third, the proposed permanent closure of a European production facility could generate $100 million to $120 million in fourth-quarter charges, with roughly $40 million to $50 million in future cash costs, and its final outcome will influence near-term results and restructuring progress.
Finally, watch cash flow and leverage. The company now expects its net debt leverage ratio to approximate 4.5 to 5.0 times at year-end, up from 3.5 times in 2025, underscoring the importance of converting Fit to Win benefits into improved free cash flow over time. From what I see, this is important because it highlights the need for sustained cost discipline.
