PBF Energy's third-quarter results arrive during an unusually favorable stretch for U.S. refiners, as tight global product supply and firm demand have pushed benchmark crack spreads sharply higher. The New York Harbor 2-1-1 margin averaged nearly $65 per barrel in the quarter, compared with about $26 a year earlier. In my view, the report offered a clear test of whether PBF could translate that strong pricing environment into cash flow while executing turnarounds and balance-sheet improvements. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry. The company entered the quarter with a full operating system, and results underscore how coastal refining assets can benefit from elevated margins and crude differentials.
PBF Energy reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $12.13 billion, up from $7.65 billion in the same period a year ago. Net income (GAAP) totaled $1.54 billion, with diluted earnings per share of $12.54. Excluding special items, adjusted earnings were $12.78 per share and adjusted EBITDA was approximately $2.3 billion.
Both top and bottom lines surpassed Wall Street expectations: adjusted earnings beat the consensus estimate of $11.34 per share, while revenue topped estimates by more than 12%. Special items reduced net income by about $29 million, or $0.24 per share, largely tied to the company's Refining Business Improvement (RBI) initiative and a pre-tax loss on the extinguishment of debt related to refinancing activity.
Operationally, total throughput averaged approximately 924,000 barrels per day, in line with guidance. Cash from operations was about $1.9 billion, and the company ended the quarter with roughly $2.5 billion in cash against about $2.1 billion of total debt. PBF also raised its quarterly dividend to $0.325 per share, an 18% increase.
PBF Energy shares have gained roughly 170% since the start of 2026, reflecting a broader rerating of U.S. refining stocks amid tight product supply and elevated crack spreads. The third-quarter beat reinforces that narrative, with management citing strong product markets, tight supply, and firm demand as the primary drivers. Investors also responded to the company's accelerated deleveraging and its decision to raise the dividend. Still, the stock's elevated run leaves it sensitive to any softening in refining margins or shifts in the global supply picture, making management's forward commentary a key area of focus for shareholders.
PBF guided to fourth-quarter throughput of 925,000 to 985,000 barrels per day, with completed turnarounds providing what management described as a clear operational runway for the rest of 2026. The company expects its renewable diesel joint venture, St. Bernard Renewables, to produce 18,000 to 20,000 barrels per day in the fourth quarter.
On costs, PBF reiterated full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance of $825 million to $875 million, excluding Martinez rebuild spending. Management said its Refining Business Improvement program has generated more than $230 million of run-rate cost savings and is expected to grow beyond $350 million by year-end.
Investors should monitor refining margin trends, crude differentials, and any normalization of global product flows, which could affect capture rates. Management expects recent debt paydowns to reduce interest expense by at least $130 million in 2027, while the company projects using a substantial majority of its net operating loss (NOL) carryforwards in 2026, with an effective tax rate of approximately 26% for modeling purposes.
