DraftKings Inc. (DKNG), the Boston-based leader in online sports betting, iGaming, and daily fantasy sports, suffered one of its sharpest single-session declines on record Friday. The stock tumbled 26.96%, or roughly $6.34, to about $17.18, down from a prior close of $23.52. The market reaction was driven primarily by third-quarter results that missed expectations and, more importantly, a substantial downward revision to the company's full-year profitability outlook as it pours capital into its new prediction markets offering.
The company's Q3 2026 report set the stage for the selloff. DraftKings generated revenue of $1.33 billion, up 16% year over year, but short of the roughly $1.39–$1.40 billion analysts had anticipated. The adjusted loss widened to $0.53 per share, worse than the consensus estimate of a roughly $0.39 loss. On a GAAP basis, the net loss expanded to $468.7 million, or $0.94 per share, compared with a $256.8 million loss a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA swung to a loss of $316.9 million, a sharp reversal from profitability in the prior-year period.
The quarterly miss alone was painful, but the revised outlook did the heavier damage. DraftKings lowered its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $6.35–$6.55 billion from a prior range of $6.5–$6.9 billion. More dramatically, it slashed adjusted EBITDA guidance to $175–$275 million from $700–$900 million, eliminating the bulk of the profitability investors had priced in for the year. Management attributed the cut to a $650–$700 million adjusted EBITDA investment in its Predictions offering, which launched late last year, with $175–$225 million of that spending slated for the fourth quarter alone. The company cautioned that prediction markets revenue would be immaterial in 2026 as promotional spending offsets most gross revenue.
The guidance revision also reflects intensifying competition. DraftKings is spending heavily to defend its position against a new wave of prediction-market operators such as Kalshi and Polymarket, while rival Flutter Entertainment's FanDuel has similarly noted rising advertising costs driven by these entrants. The result is a more expensive, less predictable path to profitability across the sports betting and prediction-markets landscape, weighing on sentiment for the entire group.
The decline was overwhelmingly company-specific. Broader U.S. index futures were mixed Friday, with the Dow indicated sharply lower while other benchmarks were steadier, confirming that DraftKings' move was an earnings-driven reaction rather than a broad market selloff. Trading volume surged well above typical levels as investors repriced the stock following the report, which was released after Thursday's close. The shares sliced through multiple technical support levels and prior consolidation zones, leaving the stock trading near the lower end of its 52-week range.
Investors will now focus on whether the heavy investment in Predictions begins to show a credible return. Management pointed to more than 1.6 million customers who have engaged with the predictions offering this year and issued fiscal 2027 guidance of $7.35–$7.75 billion in revenue and $800 million–$1 billion in adjusted EBITDA — both below consensus, signaling that profitability pressure extends into next year. Key near-term catalysts include analyst rating and price-target revisions in the days ahead, fourth-quarter execution, and any updates on the competitive dynamics with Kalshi, Polymarket, and FanDuel. Risks remain tilted to the downside if prediction-markets spending fails to convert into durable revenue, while a faster-than-expected payback could help stabilize the shares.
