DraftKings Inc. (DKNG), a leading U.S. online sports betting, iGaming, and daily fantasy sports operator, saw its stock crater in Friday's session after the company reported disappointing third-quarter results and cut its financial outlook. The shares fell roughly 27.68%, dropping from a prior closing price of $23.52 to approximately $17.01. The selling was driven by a revenue miss, a wider-than-expected adjusted loss, and a steep reduction in full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance tied to aggressive spending on the company's prediction-markets business.
DraftKings posted third-quarter revenue of $1.33 billion, up about 16% year over year but below the roughly $1.4 billion analysts had anticipated. The bottom line deteriorated more sharply: the company reported an adjusted loss of $0.53 per share, wider than the consensus estimate for a loss of around $0.39 per share. Adjusted EBITDA swung to a loss of $316.9 million, a dramatic reversal from prior profitability and far worse than expectations. Sportsbook revenue grew 31.5% to roughly $784 million, but iGaming growth slowed to about 2.1%, underscoring uneven momentum across the business.
The earnings miss alone was significant, but the revised outlook proved even more damaging. DraftKings lowered its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $6.35 billion to $6.55 billion, down from a prior range of $6.5 billion to $6.9 billion. More notably, management slashed 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $175 million to $275 million from a previous $700 million to $900 million — a roughly 70% reduction that effectively wiped out most of the year's expected profitability. The company attributed the downgrade to a $650 million to $700 million adjusted EBITDA investment in its "Predictions" platform, which competes against prediction-market rivals such as Kalshi and Polymarket.
Investors reacted negatively to the scale and speed of the prediction-markets push. Management acknowledged that prediction-markets revenue will remain largely immaterial in 2026 because customer promotions offset most gross revenue, even as spending accelerates — including a planned $175 million to $225 million investment in the fourth quarter alone. The company also issued 2027 guidance that came in below consensus, with revenue of $7.35 billion to $7.75 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $800 million to $1 billion. While CEO Jason Robins defended the strategy as positioning the company for growth, the market signaled that the path to profitability now looks longer and more expensive than previously priced in.
The decline in DKNG was driven by company-specific news rather than a broad market selloff, with shares underperforming both the wider indices and much of the gaming sector. Trading volume surged well above typical levels as investors repositioned following the earnings release, and the stock gapped down sharply at the open after already falling in after-hours and pre-market trading. The move broke through several short-term technical levels and erased weeks of gains, reflecting a rapid repricing of near-term earnings power rather than a deterioration in the core sports-betting franchise, which management said continues to generate meaningful free cash flow.
Looking ahead, traders will focus on whether the core sportsbook and iGaming businesses can sustain growth while the company funds its prediction-markets expansion. Key areas to watch include fourth-quarter execution, any updates on prediction-markets customer acquisition and payback periods, and whether competitive marketing costs across the industry continue to climb. Analysts will also reassess their models following the guidance reset, with particular attention on the timeline for the core business to offset the heavy investment cycle. Risks include intensifying competition, regulatory developments in sports betting and prediction markets, and the possibility that returns on the new platform take longer to materialize than management projects.
