Haleon plc (HLN), the British consumer healthcare group behind brands such as Sensodyne, Panadol, Advil, Centrum, and Voltaren, suffered a sharp sell-off in Thursday's session. Shares fell 12.6% to $8.74, down from a prior close of $10.00, marking one of the steepest single-day declines for the stock since its 2022 separation from GSK. The drop was triggered by a third-quarter trading update in which the company lowered its full-year revenue growth outlook, citing soft cold-and-flu consumption and a series of regional headwinds.
The decisive catalyst behind the move was a downward revision to Haleon's full-year outlook. Management now expects organic revenue growth of around 2.5% for 2026, a meaningful step down from the 3% to 5% range it had guided to at its half-year results. Analysts had been forecasting roughly 3.2%, so the new target landed well below consensus expectations and triggered an earnings-driven sell-off as investors repriced the shares.
Third-quarter organic revenue growth came in at 2.6%, below the company's own expectations. The shortfall was concentrated in the respiratory-health category, where organic revenue fell 2% as a subdued cough, cold, and flu season dampened consumption and led to lower orders in North America, Haleon's largest market. With price contributing 2.1% and volume/mix just 0.5%, the results underscored a reliance on pricing rather than underlying volume growth.
Beyond the seasonal weakness, two regional issues compounded the outlook cut. In China, a change in raw-material classifications prompted the suspension of imports of over-the-counter Centrum multivitamins, weighing on the Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements category, which declined 0.5%. Separately, Haleon said it would accelerate planned changes to its Brazil go-to-market strategy into the fourth quarter, a move expected to reduce fourth-quarter net revenue by £15 million to £20 million.
Haleon sought to cushion the news by announcing a further £500 million share buyback, to be executed by Citigroup and completed by February 2027. Oral Health was a genuine bright spot, with organic revenue up 8.8% on strong Sensodyne performance. However, the buyback and the category strength were not enough to offset investor concern about weakening momentum across the wider portfolio, and shares remained firmly lower.
The sell-off in HLN ran against the grain of the broader tape, with the FTSE 100 trading higher on the day, underscoring that the decline was company-specific rather than a reflection of general market sentiment. Trading volume was elevated as investors reacted to the guidance revision. The move also aligned with pressure across the consumer-health sector, where rival Reckitt had earlier trimmed its own profit guidance amid manufacturing difficulties in its U.S. disinfectant business.
Attention now turns to whether a stronger cold-and-flu season can restore momentum in the respiratory-health franchise and whether the company can resolve the China import disruption on Centrum. Investors will also monitor the execution of the Brazil transition and its impact on fourth-quarter revenue. Haleon reiterated its medium-term targets of 4% to 6% annual organic revenue growth and high-single-digit adjusted operating profit growth, but the near-term guidance reset leaves questions about the pace at which the business can return to that trajectory. Risks include further seasonal weakness, persistent consumer softness in Europe, and ongoing competitive pressures across the consumer-health sector.
