The State Street SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF is a passively managed fund that seeks to track the S&P Metals & Mining Select Industry Index, an equal-weighted benchmark covering the metals and mining segment of the U.S. equity market. Rather than concentrating in the largest companies, the equal-weighted structure spreads exposure more evenly across roughly 40 constituents, giving mid- and small-cap miners outsized influence relative to market-cap-weighted peers.
The portfolio is dominated by basic materials, which represent a substantial majority of assets, with smaller allocations to energy and industrial names. Top holdings include Hecla Mining (HL), Newmont (NEM), Coeur Mining (CDE), Royal Gold (RGLD), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), Uranium Energy (UEC), and Nucor (NUE). The fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.35% and holds several billion dollars in assets under management (AUM).
Because the index is equal-weighted and tilted toward coal, gold, steel, and diversified mining, a synchronized pullback across cyclical commodities translates directly into broad fund-level weakness.
Over the trailing 30 days, XME fell approximately 10.7%, retreating from about $107.96 to $96.37. The move was not a single-day shock but a steady, downward-trending grind punctuated by brief bounces, consistent with sustained selling pressure.
Zooming out to the trailing quarter, the picture is more nuanced. The fund ended the period roughly 5.3% lower, from about $101.74 to $96.37. That headline figure understates volatility, however: XME rallied through August to a peak near $123 before reversing sharply into October. From what I see, this points to a market that first rewarded cyclical strength and then rotated aggressively away from it.
The recent ETF price movement was primarily a function of weakness across the commodity-exposed equities that dominate the portfolio. As a basket of miners and metals producers, XME is highly sensitive to global growth expectations, the U.S. dollar, and interest rates. When those forces turn against cyclicals, steel, copper, coal, and precious metals producers tend to fall in tandem.
Among the largest holdings, gold and silver miners such as Newmont (NEM), Hecla Mining (HL), and Coeur Mining (CDE) are exposed to precious metals prices and cost inflation, while Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) tracks copper. Steel producers such as Nucor (NUE) and Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) are tied to industrial demand. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry. Because the index is equal-weighted, simultaneous declines across these groups amplified the fund-level drawdown.
The broader three-month trend reflected a full rotation cycle. Through August, mining equities rallied as investors favored inflation-sensitive and industrial cyclical names, lifting XME toward $123. That momentum faded as the macro environment shifted — with firmer interest-rate expectations and renewed concerns about global manufacturing demand — prompting a sustained de-rating of commodity equities into October.
Equal weighting was again a key structural factor. Rather than concentrating in diversified majors, the fund carries meaningful weight in smaller, higher-beta producers, which tend to move more sharply in both directions. This positioning explains the fund's larger drawdown relative to broader market indexes.
Several themes are likely to influence XME over the coming months. The trajectory of interest rates and the U.S. dollar remains central, as both shape the relative appeal of non-yielding and commodity-linked equities. Inflation trends and global manufacturing activity will similarly guide demand expectations for copper, steel, and aluminum, while precious metals miners will remain sensitive to real yields and safe-haven flows.
On the supply side, capital expenditures, production costs, and inventory levels across major producers will factor into earnings cycles for holdings such as Freeport-McMoRan, Nucor, and Newmont. Regulatory and trade-policy developments affecting mining, coal, and energy could also shift the outlook for the fund's coal and energy exposures. Investors should monitor fund flows and sector rotation signals for evidence of whether the recent risk-off move in metals and mining persists or reverses.
In my view, Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a useful part of my routine when I want to quickly scan metals and mining names for technical setups, volatility patterns, and relative strength shifts. It surfaces candidates across the sector more efficiently than manual work, which helps me stay on top of how individual holdings are moving within the broader XME basket.
