VS
CLF vs. X commentary
Nov 18, 2024

CLF and X companies are vertically integrated manufacturers and suppliers of steel in the US market primarily, providing rolled steel slabs, strip mill plates, and tin mill products, as well as iron ore and coke. X is the most recognized steel producer in the US, based in Pittsburg, PA. CLF is based in Cleveland, OH, which is also a long-time steel hub, but until recent times CLF was primarily known as a miner of iron. Acquisitions in recent years have made it a top manufacturer and competitor with X. When analysts last year predicted that these steel manufacturers would benefit from a revival in American auto production, X’s shares were in higher demand, almost exclusively due to the name recognition factor. Both companies have to compete with lighter-weight aluminum manufacturers for the automotive business, and more electric vehicles should mean the industry will gravitate toward aluminum instead. These two companies use blast furnaces to produce steel, which is becoming an outdated method of production.
