American International Group (AIG) released its third-quarter 2026 results after the market closed on November 3, 2026, for the period ended September 30, 2026. The quarter stands out as it completes what CEO Eric Andersen described as an “outstanding first nine months,” while also testing the company’s ability to maintain the double-digit premium growth and underwriting discipline highlighted at its 2025 Investor Day. From what I see, investors focus on the combined ratio and accident-year results as indicators of pricing power across AIG’s global book, even as North American catastrophe activity created a clear headwind this period. The results also tie directly into shareholder returns given the ongoing buyback activity and rising adjusted book value per share.
AIG posted net income attributable to common shareholders of $844 million, or $1.60 per diluted share, compared with $519 million, or $0.93, in the same quarter last year. The improvement came from changes in investment fair values, higher General Insurance net investment income, increased earned premiums, and solid accident-year underwriting. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Adjusted after-tax income reached $1.1 billion, or $2.06 per diluted share, down from $1.2 billion, or $2.20, a year earlier, mainly due to lower underwriting income and reduced net investment income in Other Operations. Total net investment income increased to $1.1 billion from $772 million, while the adjusted pre-tax version rose to $1.1 billion from $1.0 billion.
General Insurance net premiums written advanced 7% to $6.7 billion (8% constant dollar), including 13% growth in International Commercial NPW. Underwriting income fell to $564 million from $793 million after $283 million in catastrophe charges (4.4 loss-ratio points). The combined ratio moved to 91.3% from 86.8%, yet the accident-year combined ratio excluding catastrophes remained steady at 88.4%. The board approved a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share.
The third-quarter results showed a mixed but generally steady picture for AIG. The rise in net income and 8% constant-dollar premium growth underscore continued top-line strength, while the higher combined ratio and lower adjusted earnings per share reflect the impact of elevated catastrophe losses from North American storms and less favorable prior-year reserve development. One thing that stands out is how the accident-year combined ratio ex-catastrophes held close to prior levels, giving investors a clearer view of underlying performance. Capital returns stayed in focus with $787 million returned to shareholders and further growth in adjusted book value. Post-earnings reaction will likely depend on how management discusses catastrophe trends and pricing conditions into the fourth quarter.
Turning to the outlook, several themes deserve attention as AIG enters the fourth quarter of 2026 and works toward its 2025 Investor Day targets. Management noted continued “excellent progress,” with the first nine months delivering double-digit premium growth, more than $2 billion in underwriting income, and a 140-basis-point combined-ratio improvement. Catastrophe trends remain a variable factor, as third-quarter losses of $283 million contrast with unusually low activity last year. Pricing and business mix in commercial and personal lines, reserve development, fixed-income interest income, and the pace of buybacks and dividends will all help determine whether premium momentum converts into sustained earnings growth.
