Alphabet Inc. serves as the parent of Google, the dominant player in digital advertising and search. Its operations include Google Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and Google Cloud, plus initiatives such as the Waymo autonomous-driving project. Advertising continues to drive the bulk of revenue, while Google Cloud has emerged as a fast-expanding second engine. The company is directing substantial resources toward its artificial-intelligence efforts, including the Gemini model family and custom Tensor Processing Unit chips. With a multi-trillion-dollar market capitalization, GOOG remains a key indicator for digital advertising trends, cloud growth, and the broader rollout of AI technology.
Over the trailing 30 days, GOOG fell approximately 17%, slipping from a closing level near $337 on September 29 to roughly $278 in the most recent session. The decline accelerated in late October after the earnings release.
The quarterly picture shows a comparable overall drop but with a different pattern. Shares began the period near $336 in late July, rose to a high of roughly $375 in early August, and then retreated steadily. From that July starting point to the latest level, GOOG is down about 17% over the quarter, reflecting a broader change in investor sentiment.
The primary catalyst was Alphabet's third-quarter earnings report released on October 28. Revenue came in at $127.6 billion, up 25% year over year but below the roughly $128.2 billion consensus. Adjusted earnings per share of $2.67 also missed the approximately $3.02 expected by analysts, while reported EPS of $2.12 reflected unrealized losses on the company's stakes in SpaceX and Anthropic.
Two concerns stood out. Search and other advertising revenue rose 12% to about $63.3 billion, below forecasts, prompting discussion about whether AI-generated answers are affecting monetization of traditional search. At the same time, AI-related spending continued to rise, with capital expenditures of roughly $51.4 billion contributing to negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion for a second consecutive quarter. Google Cloud's 103% revenue growth to $30.7 billion was not enough to ease those worries, and the stock declined sharply in after-hours and follow-on trading. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The quarterly decline reflects a longer reassessment of Alphabet's AI investment cycle. Shares reached a peak near $375 in early August after second-quarter results that included strong revenue and earnings-per-share gains driven in part by the SpaceX and Anthropic holdings. That report also raised full-year capital-expenditure guidance to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion and marked the first quarter of negative free cash flow since the company's 2004 listing, which triggered an extended sell-off.
Through the rest of the quarter, expectations for higher interest rates, rotation out of high-valuation technology names, and ongoing questions about the timeline for returns on AI spending kept pressure on the stock. The October earnings miss brought those concerns into sharper focus.
Looking ahead, attention is likely to center on whether advertising growth reaccelerates as Alphabet monetizes AI Overviews and AI Mode queries, and whether search revenue keeps pace with rising query volumes. Fourth-quarter results and detailed 2027 capital-expenditure guidance will draw close scrutiny, as will any improvement or deterioration in free cash flow. Google Cloud momentum, TPU adoption, and Gemini commercialization remain important operational markers. Macroeconomic conditions, including the path of interest rates, and regulatory developments will also influence how the market values the company's spending-heavy AI approach. None of this constitutes a prediction of future price performance.
