BlackLine, a provider of cloud-based financial close and accounting automation software for the Office of the CFO, has spent recent quarters transitioning customers toward platform-based pricing and its Verity AI suite. That strategic shift has pressured near-term user growth even as it aims to deepen long-term customer relationships. In my view, this report serves as a key checkpoint on whether larger, longer enterprise commitments can offset slower expansion in the lower end of the market, and whether efficiency gains are translating into meaningful margin and free cash flow improvement. The results offer fresh evidence on both fronts, making the quarter important for gauging the pace of BlackLine's business transformation. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, BlackLine reported total revenue of $193.4 million, up 8.5% from $178.3 million a year earlier but just below the $194.16 million consensus. Subscription and support revenue rose 8.9% to $183.1 million, while professional services revenue grew at a slower 2% pace.
Non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) reached $0.64, matching the $0.63 consensus estimate and up from $0.51 in the prior-year quarter. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) diluted EPS was $0.18, compared with $0.09 a year ago. Non-GAAP operating income of $50.09 million produced a 25.9% margin, up 450 basis points year over year and above the top end of management's guidance range. From what I see, the margin expansion stands out as a clear positive in an otherwise mixed report.
Management guided fourth-quarter revenue to between $195 million and $197 million, a $196 million midpoint that fell below the $201.8 million consensus. Full-year 2026 revenue guidance was set at $759.5 million to $761.5 million, and full-year adjusted EPS guidance was lowered to $2.49 at the midpoint. Billings came in at $170.7 million, while remaining performance obligations (RPO) grew 14.3% to about $1.1 billion.
Shares of BlackLine fell roughly 2.7% to $32.75 in the immediate aftermath of the report. The decline reflected a mixed picture: solid profitability, cash flow, and margin expansion were offset by fourth-quarter revenue guidance that landed below consensus and by billings that trailed expectations. Management attributed the tempered outlook in part to the timing of customer decisions, while highlighting that remaining performance obligations continued to grow ahead of revenue on the strength of larger deal sizes and longer contract terms. Investors appeared to weigh the short-term top-line softness more heavily than the improving profitability metrics.
Looking ahead, investors will be watching whether BlackLine can accelerate revenue growth as its platform transition matures. The company reported that platform pricing represented 23% of eligible annual recurring revenue (ARR), up from 17% in the prior quarter, signaling continued adoption of its newer commercial model. Total ARR grew 7% to $735 million, a figure that will be closely tracked as a leading indicator of subscription momentum. I’m watching this closely as a sign of how the shift is landing with customers.
Margin and cash flow trends also remain central to the story. Non-GAAP operating margin of 25.9% and year-to-date free cash flow of about $130 million demonstrate that the company is converting efficiency efforts into profitability, and management expects full-year free cash flow growth of roughly 20%.
Other factors to monitor include the integration of the September acquisition of NetNow, continued progress with SAP-led partnerships (SAP accounted for 26% of revenue), and the pace of churn in lower mid-market accounts. Management also increased its share repurchase authorization by $100 million, a signal of confidence in long-term cash generation. Whether larger enterprise deals and platform migrations can offset near-term top-line headwinds will be the central question heading into the next several quarters.
