Blackstone (BX) is the world's largest alternative asset manager, overseeing roughly $1.35 trillion in assets under management across private equity, real estate, credit and insurance, infrastructure, and multi-asset strategies. The firm generates revenue through management fees and performance-based earnings, and it has become a leading provider of private capital to institutional, insurance, and individual ("private wealth") investors.
Blackstone has positioned itself at the center of the artificial-intelligence infrastructure build-out, with a data center platform valued at about $185 billion and plans to commit up to $100 billion across its data center portfolio. Investors follow the stock closely because its fee-related earnings, distributable earnings, and fundraising inflows serve as barometers for the broader alternative-asset management industry. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the last 30 days, Blackstone shares fell approximately 19.5%, declining from a closing price near $142.39 in late August to $114.56 as of late September 2026. The move accelerated through September, with the stock losing ground in most sessions and posting several consecutive down days.
Over the trailing quarter, the picture is different. Three months earlier, the stock traded near $114.88, meaning the quarterly change is only slightly negative at roughly -0.3%. That near-flat figure, however, conceals considerable volatility: Blackstone rallied strongly in July and early August to a high near $149–$150 before giving back those gains through September.
Several factors weighed on Blackstone shares during September 2026. First, private credit sentiment remained a headwind, as peers such as Apollo Global Management (APO) and Blue Owl (OWL) also slid even as early signs of easing redemption pressures emerged.
Second, rising U.S. Treasury yields to multi-year highs created a more challenging backdrop for leveraged and rate-sensitive strategies, while expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate hikes dampened near-term merger-and-acquisition and IPO activity—key exit channels for private equity.
Third, concerns about the artificial-intelligence sector pressured the stock. Blackstone's large data center and AI exposure made it vulnerable to reports that roughly $68 billion in data center projects were delayed or disrupted during the year. Finally, a reported rejection by Australia's IDP Education of a roughly $494 million takeover approach added to deal-making uncertainty, even as the company advanced its retail expansion by launching the Blackstone Private Markets Fund (BXPM) for eligible non-U.S. investors.
Blackstone's broader three-month performance was shaped by a powerful fundamental story that temporarily outweighed market headwinds. In late July, the company reported second-quarter 2026 results that included distributable earnings of $2.0 billion, or $1.52 per share, up about 26% year over year, and total revenue of roughly $5.04 billion. Assets under management reached a record $1.35 trillion, up 11% from a year earlier, with nearly $70 billion in quarterly inflows.
Management highlighted its early positioning in AI infrastructure, including a partnership with Alphabet (GOOGL) unit Google to build an AI cloud provider, a collaboration with Anthropic, and a financing platform with Broadcom (AVGO). These catalysts helped drive the stock to its August highs before rate, credit, and AI-valuation concerns triggered the subsequent reversal. From what I see, the AI exposure continues to be a double-edged sword worth monitoring closely.
Looking ahead, investors should monitor several factors. Blackstone's next quarterly earnings report is expected in late October 2026, and results—along with guidance on base management fee growth, realizations, and fundraising—will be closely scrutinized. Macroeconomic conditions remain central, particularly the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path, Treasury yield levels, and the health of IPO and M&A markets.
Within the business, watch private credit redemption trends, especially in the firm's retail credit vehicles, as well as continued execution of its AI and data center strategy. Analyst expectations, including a one-year consensus price target in the mid-$140s, suggest a more favorable medium-term view than recent price action implies, but realized performance will depend on deployment, realization timing, and the stability of capital markets.
