CCOI has been working through a multi-quarter transition following its 2023 acquisition of Sprint's wireline assets. The company has been intentionally exiting lower-margin off-net and enterprise contracts, which has weighed on revenue for more than a year even as it shifts toward higher-value on-net and optical wavelength services. This quarter's results are less about any single number and more about the pace of that shift. I was particularly interested in whether profitability improvements could offset ongoing revenue pressure and how capital allocation decisions, including the dividend suspension, might affect the balance sheet ahead of debt maturities.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, CCOI posted total revenue of $231.2 million, down 4.4% from $241.95 million a year earlier and below the Zacks consensus of $234.41 million. The shortfall came mainly from weakness in the acquired off-net customer base and enterprise segment, partly offset by growth in net-centric and wavelength services.
On the bottom line, the company reported a GAAP diluted loss of $0.62 per share, narrower than the $0.87 loss from a year ago and better than the consensus estimate of a $0.83 loss. Analysts noted that the beat included a roughly $11.3 million gain from repurchasing 2032 secured notes at a discount, so core operating progress was more measured than the headline figure alone suggests. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Adjusted EBITDA reached $73.9 million, up from $71.1 million in the prior quarter, lifting the margin to 32%. Operating margin improved to negative 3% from negative 7.5% a year earlier. Free cash flow was approximately negative $32.5 million, roughly in line with the prior-year period. Wavelength revenue grew 57% year over year to about $16 million, with faster customer additions highlighting the focus on optical transport as a key growth area.
Shares of CCOI moved down about 2% right after the release. The narrower loss and margin expansion were tempered by the revenue miss and the ongoing streak of year-over-year declines. Additional caution came from the dividend suspension and news that 2027 debt refinancing efforts had stalled, raising questions about balance-sheet risk even as management highlighted progress on leverage reduction and data-center monetization. From what I see, investors appear to be waiting for clearer signs of revenue stabilization before becoming more constructive.
The key question ahead is whether wavelength growth and on-net expansion can offset the drag from legacy contract cancellations. Management is aiming for a larger share of the North American long-haul wavelength market, and recent customer additions suggest momentum, though growth rates are easing from earlier high levels.
Balance-sheet execution remains critical. With a sizable 2027 debt maturity still ahead and the dividend now suspended, progress on reducing net leverage and completing asset sales will be worth monitoring to improve liquidity.
Adjusted EBITDA margins and free cash flow will also be important to track. Continued cost discipline and a shift toward higher-margin services should support further margin gains, but sustained improvement will depend on whether revenue declines begin to stabilize. Churn in the on-net base, sales-force trends, and IPv4 leasing growth offer additional signals on underlying business health.
