Community Trust Bancorp’s third-quarter results give a useful snapshot of regional banking trends in the Southeast, where the company operates through Community Trust Bank in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee. The report shows the usual balance many lenders face right now: steady loan and deposit expansion alongside rising credit costs. After beating consensus EPS estimates in three of the previous four quarters, this release tests whether that pattern can hold as charge-offs move back toward more normal levels.
For the three months ended September 30, 2026, CTBI posted net income of $25.9 million, or $1.43 per diluted share, compared with $23.9 million, or $1.32 per share, in the same quarter last year. The figure came in about 13% below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.65 per share.
Total revenue of $79.7 million increased 11.5% from $71.5 million a year earlier, though it fell just short of expectations. Net interest income climbed to $61.1 million, a 9.9% year-over-year gain, even as the net interest margin slipped to 3.6% from the 3.8% analysts had projected and down 17 basis points sequentially. Noninterest income reached $18.6 million, and the efficiency ratio improved to 45.9%.
Balance-sheet expansion continued to stand out. Total assets reached $7.1 billion, loans grew 10.6% year over year to $5.3 billion, and deposits plus repurchase agreements rose 6.5% to $6.0 billion. Book value per share advanced to $48.29. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Shares of CTBI had already climbed roughly 33% year to date heading into the report. The earnings and revenue shortfall, along with the jump in net charge-offs, is likely to cool some of that near-term optimism. The main driver behind the higher charge-off number was an $8.7 million commercial credit that had been listed as an accruing loan more than 90 days past due; when the collateral sold at auction for less than expected, it produced a $4.3 million charge-off. While the situation appears isolated, it has focused attention on credit quality and the possibility of similar issues elsewhere in the book.
Going forward, the key question is whether CTBI can keep loan growth on track without further pressure on asset quality. The allowance for credit losses remained at 1.23% of total loans, and coverage of nonperforming loans rose to 289.3%, indicating management views reserves as adequate. Even so, the commercial credit event will keep scrutiny on that part of the portfolio, where $5.0 million of the period’s charge-offs were concentrated.
Net interest margin will also stay in focus. The 17-basis-point sequential decline reflects continued funding-cost pressure and competitive deposit pricing. Nonaccrual loans fell to $9.5 million, a positive sign, although loans 30–89 days past due rose modestly from the prior quarter.
Capital and shareholder returns remain worth monitoring as well. With an annualized dividend yield near 3.83% and book value per share at $48.29, the bank continues to appeal to income-focused investors. How management balances growth, credit discipline, and capital returns will shape the story in coming quarters. From what I see, the 17-basis-point NIM decline and the commercial credit event are the two items that merit the closest follow-up.
