CWEB is a leveraged ETF that seeks to deliver 200% of the daily performance of the CSI Overseas China Internet Index. The underlying index tracks publicly traded China-based companies focused on internet and internet-related sectors. Launched in November 2016 and managed by Direxion, the fund holds roughly $230 million to $240 million in assets under management with a net expense ratio of about 1.25% to 1.27%.
The fund gains its leveraged exposure mainly through holdings in the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB), which makes up roughly 56% to 66% of net assets, along with swaps and cash collateral. Through KWEB, CWEB's exposure concentrates in Communication Services (around 45%) and Consumer Cyclical (about 35%), with smaller weights in Healthcare, Technology, and Real Estate. Top underlying holdings include Tencent Holdings, BABA, PDD Holdings, Meituan, NetEase, Baidu, JD.com, and Kuaishou. This concentrated, high-beta setup makes CWEB particularly sensitive to shifts in Chinese internet sentiment, which explains the scale of its recent move.
Over the past 30 days, CWEB rose roughly 25%, moving from a July 1 close of $19.93 to around $24.84 in late-July trading. The advance was not smooth, with notable spikes in mid-July after the Apple Intelligence approval sparked a rally in US-listed Chinese internet shares. Volume in strong sessions topped 1.3 million shares, well above the fund's typical 500,000 to 600,000 shares.
Over the full quarter, however, CWEB is still down about 7%. It began May near $26.50 to $28.50 before a sharp seven-week drop that bottomed at $17.70 on June 25. That created a roughly 40% trough-to-peak swing within the quarter. The V-shaped pattern highlights how the 2x daily structure amplifies both losses and gains.
The standout catalyst came when China's cyberspace regulator approved Apple Intelligence for iPhones in the country, ending a two-year wait. BABA confirmed its Qwen AI model would integrate into Apple's iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms in China, while BIDU was also named a partner. BABA shares jumped as much as 27% in July, becoming the largest single contributor to CWEB's performance.
Broader AI momentum added fuel. Tencent noted its Hunyuan Hy3 model saw usage grow more than 68-fold from the prior version and briefly ranked first globally on OpenRouter. Xiaomi's MiMo-V2.5 model led OpenRouter's weekly and monthly rankings at the same time. Meituan open-sourced LongCat-2.0, and Alibaba's cloud revenue was expected to grow around 45% year-over-year, beating earlier forecasts.
Capital flows reinforced the move. China-focused equity funds pulled in $9 billion in one early-July week, the largest inflow since December 2025 per BofA Global Research. Southbound flows into Hong Kong via Stock Connect reached about HK$873 billion in July, far above the HK$271 billion seen in all of June. The People's Bank of China also signaled support by pledging higher foreign-exchange reserve allocations to Hong Kong.
US macro conditions helped as well. The June PCE price index fell 0.1% month-over-month, the first decline in six years, while core PCE rose just 0.1%, below expectations. Softer inflation eased rate-hike concerns and supported growth equities, including emerging-market tech names. The subsequent MSFT rally after strong earnings, with Azure revenue up 43%, further lifted global cloud and AI sentiment.
The quarterly decline of roughly 7% understates the severity of the May-June drop. The MSCI China Index neared bear-market territory, falling more than 20% from its October 2025 peak. Chinese retail sales contracted in May for the first time since the pandemic, and consumer spending during the Dragon Boat Festival was flat year-over-year. The "618" shopping event saw muted demand, and Beijing's regulator reprimanded major e-commerce platforms including BABA, JD, and PDD Holdings over promotional practices.
Index composition also weighed on offshore Chinese equities. Unlike South Korean and Taiwanese benchmarks heavy in semiconductors benefiting from the global AI cycle, offshore China indices remain dominated by internet platforms and consumer businesses. Global capital rotated toward pure-play AI hardware, leaving Chinese internet stocks underowned. Analysts cut forward earnings estimates for Hang Seng China Enterprises Index constituents by nearly 3% while raising projections for Korea's Kospi by 246% and Taiwan's Taiex by 58%.
Weak domestic consumption, geopolitical tensions including the Pentagon adding BABA and BYD to a list of companies allegedly working with the Chinese government, and the rotation away from internet platforms created a difficult backdrop that CWEB's 2x structure magnified.
Whether the July rebound holds will depend on whether the AI-driven re-rating of Chinese internet stocks moves beyond short-term sentiment into lasting fundamental gains. August earnings from BABA, Tencent, Meituan, JD.com, and Baidu will provide the next test, with focus on cloud growth, AI monetization, e-commerce margins, and capex guidance.
China's macro picture stays fragile. The property market showed tentative stabilization in June with slower new-home price declines, yet excess supply and years of falling prices continue to pressure household wealth and confidence. The State Council's five-year consumption plan targeting 60 trillion yuan in retail sales by 2030 offers a framework, but details on timing remain limited. Any major new fiscal or monetary stimulus from the Politburo could act as a catalyst.
US policy and the dollar will also influence flows into emerging-market equities. Cooling US inflation has helped, but any reacceleration could shift rate-cut expectations. Geopolitical developments around US-China trade and technology policy remain ongoing risks.
Investors should keep in mind the mechanics of leveraged ETFs. CWEB's 2x daily reset means returns over periods longer than one day can diverge from twice the index return, especially in volatile markets where compounding matters. The fund's expense ratio and roughly 81% portfolio turnover add further considerations. The recent rally shows the upside leverage can deliver when sentiment turns positive, but the same structure can accelerate losses when conditions change.
In my research, I frequently turn to Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan volatile sectors like Chinese internet equities. It helps me apply technical indicators, fundamental metrics, volatility measures, and AI signals across thousands of securities to spot trends and compare opportunities more efficiently than manual methods alone. This tool has become a regular part of how I evaluate leveraged ETFs and their underlying drivers.
