Editas Medicine (EDIT) has moved within a fairly tight range over the past month and finished modestly higher. The stock advanced from a closing level near $2.51 on September 28 to roughly $2.60 by October 27, for a gain of about 3.6%. That upward move was driven mainly by one clear catalyst: regulatory clearance to begin human dosing of the company’s lead in vivo candidate, EDIT-401.
Over the full quarter the picture looks flatter. Shares started near $2.62 and ended close to $2.60, yet that surface stability hid some sizable swings inside the period. The stock reached toward $3.30 in late August, pulled back through September, and tested the low $2.20s in mid-October, consistent with the volatility that has marked the clinical-stage biotech and gene-editing group.
Editas Medicine is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based genome-editing firm focused on CRISPR-based therapies for serious diseases. It holds exclusive rights to the Broad Institute’s Cas12a patent estate and to Broad Institute and Harvard University’s Cas9 patent estates for human medicines, giving it a strong intellectual-property foundation.
After a strategic shift in late 2024, Editas stopped work on its ex vivo sickle cell and beta-thalassemia program reni-cel and cut its workforce by roughly 65% to focus resources on in vivo gene editing. Its lead program, EDIT-401, targets the LDLR gene to raise LDL-receptor expression and produce a durable drop in LDL cholesterol for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. The company competes with peers such as CRISPR Therapeutics, Intellia Therapeutics, and Beam Therapeutics. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The clearest recent driver arrived on October 8, when Editas announced Human Research Ethics Committee approval and completion of the Clinical Trial Notification process with Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration to start the Phase 1/2 Strive trial of EDIT-401. The filing is also under review in New Zealand. Five clinical sites have been chosen across Australia and New Zealand, and the company expects to begin dosing patients this year.
That milestone led Wells Fargo to upgrade EDIT to Overweight from Equal Weight and raise its price target to $6 from $4, pointing to a differentiated approach to lowering LDL cholesterol and the prospect of a value inflection once clinical proof-of-concept is in hand. Preclinical work has shown reductions of roughly 90% or greater in LDL cholesterol and other atherogenic lipoproteins in non-human primates.
Other developments included the early-September appointment of Dan Ory, M.D., as Chief Medical Officer and presentations at the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy Congress in late October. The company also said new preclinical durability data for EDIT-401 will be presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in November.
Going forward, the investment case for Editas rests on steady clinical progress with EDIT-401. Investors will follow the start of patient dosing, the November preclinical data at AHA Scientific Sessions 2026, and the first safety and tolerability results expected in the first quarter of 2027, with topline data from the dose-finding part of the trial due later in 2027.
Because the company is still pre-revenue, cash runway and spending discipline remain important, as does the pace of enrollment at the Australian and New Zealand sites. Broader sentiment toward clinical-stage biotech and gene-editing stocks, regulatory updates, and competitive advances from other in vivo editing programs will also matter. Analyst views have generally been constructive, though the shares stay sensitive to binary clinical and financing events. From what I see, one thing that stands out is how tightly the near-term path is tied to execution on EDIT-401.
In my own work I regularly look at Tickeron’s AI Screener to compare names like EDIT against peers and to spot patterns across the biotech space. The platform lets me filter on metrics that matter for clinical-stage companies and quickly see how automated signals are behaving around the sector. It has become a useful part of staying on top of developments without having to review every filing manually.
