LIT is a passively managed, thematic exchange-traded fund that aims to follow the Solactive Global Lithium Index. It covers the lithium supply chain from mining and refining all the way through battery production. The fund holds about 41 securities, carries a net expense ratio of 0.75%, and manages roughly $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion in assets under management.
Top holdings are concentrated, with RIO (Rio Tinto) accounting for around 22–23% of assets, followed by Panasonic, Samsung SDI, NAURA Technology Group, and TDK. Sector weights tilt heavily toward materials at about 47.5%, information technology near 19.5%, industrials around 17.6%, and consumer discretionary near 14%. China represents roughly 30% of assets, with additional exposure to the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, and the United States. This setup means commodity price moves or a handful of large positions can influence the entire fund.
Over the past 30 days, LIT moved from a closing level near $68.54 down to about $60.94, representing a decline of approximately 11%. The drop was uneven, with September mostly range-bound and October seeing a sharper, momentum-driven decline as lithium prices broke through key support levels.
The trailing quarter shows a similar but somewhat milder picture, with the fund slipping about 9% from a close near $66.74 three months earlier. After advancing through July and August to a peak near $77, LIT gave back those gains as sentiment around the lithium sector turned negative. The pattern reflects a gradual top followed by an accelerating correction.
The main driver was a steep drop in lithium prices. Chinese lithium carbonate futures reached their lowest level in roughly ten months, with the most-active contract falling more than 11% in one session. An agreement between the European Union and China that could cut Chinese hybrid vehicle exports to the bloc by more than half led analysts to lower their demand forecasts for electric vehicle batteries.
Supply-side factors added to the pressure. Advances in mine approvals, restarts of overseas operations, and resumed ore shipments supported expectations of higher future supply. Investors began pricing in a possible shift from a near-term deficit toward a surplus later this decade.
Within the portfolio, the impact hit lithium producers and battery names hardest. ALB (Albemarle), a core holding, declined more than 10% during the month, while TSLA (Tesla) and SQM (Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile) also weakened. Rio Tinto’s broader revenue base offered some cushion, yet its large weighting kept the fund exposed to the broader sector move.
The three-month decline stems from a broader rotation away from lithium and battery-related equities. After a solid first half fueled by energy storage demand and higher oil prices that supported electrification interest, the third quarter saw lithium prices lose momentum. September brought faster drops in Chinese futures, and October extended the decline as oversupply forecasts gained traction.
Institutional flows played a role as well. Thematic ETFs like LIT often see volatile inflows and outflows when momentum shifts, and the fund’s heavy materials concentration amplified the downside. Mixed demand signals, including softer new-energy vehicle sales and cautious restocking by cathode material producers, kept buyers cautious throughout the period.
Several factors will likely influence LIT’s path in the months ahead. Lithium supply dynamics remain central, so monitoring mine approvals, restart schedules, and any signs of production cuts will be useful. Demand indicators are equally important, such as Chinese EV sales, battery cell production schedules, and energy storage deployments that have helped offset weaker automotive demand.
Policy changes affecting EV and battery exports, especially between China, the European Union, and the United States, can shift demand assumptions quickly. Interest rate expectations and overall risk sentiment will also affect flows into cyclical thematic funds, while earnings from key holdings like ALB, RIO, and TSLA will offer direct insights into lithium pricing and battery demand. These elements together will determine whether the current oversupply narrative holds or begins to ease.
