Graphic Packaging Holding Company (GPK), the Atlanta-based producer of consumer packaging from renewable or recycled materials, has been working through a challenging cost environment throughout 2026. These third-quarter results provide a useful checkpoint on whether the company’s ongoing cost-reduction and productivity efforts are starting to counter persistent pressures from logistics, chemicals, resins, fiber, and labor. The balance sheet also remains in focus, with a net leverage ratio of 4.8x highlighting the impact of higher interest expense and ongoing debt-reduction targets. In my view, this report helps clarify the company’s trajectory toward the EBITDA growth it has targeted for 2027.
For the third quarter of 2026, GPK posted net sales of $2,192 million, essentially unchanged from $2,190 million a year earlier. A 1% volume/mix improvement was largely offset by a 1% price decline and unfavorable foreign exchange. Net income dropped to $22 million from $142 million, with diluted EPS at $0.07 versus $0.48.
Adjusted EBITDA fell 30% to $254 million, while the adjusted figure declined to $289 million from $383 million and the margin compressed to 13.2% from 17.5%. The primary driver was $83 million in commodity input and operating cost inflation. Adjusted EPS of $0.23 came in ahead of the roughly $0.22 consensus, and revenue topped the approximately $2.15 billion estimate. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Management revised full-year 2026 guidance to approximately $8.6 billion in net sales, $1.05 billion in adjusted EBITDA, and $0.65 in adjusted EPS, while keeping adjusted cash flow guidance in the $600 million to $700 million range.
Shares of GPK rose roughly 3.7% to around $9.69 right after the release. The market appeared to appreciate the revenue beat and the second straight sequential gain in adjusted EBITDA margin, even though year-over-year profitability declined. Given the cautious sentiment leading into the report amid ongoing inflation and elevated leverage, the better-than-expected top line and adjusted EPS offered some reassurance. At the same time, the steep drop in reported net income and the trimmed full-year adjusted EPS outlook kept the advance measured rather than exuberant.
Going forward, attention will center on whether pricing trends improve further in the fourth quarter and whether structural cost reductions can gain enough momentum to stabilize margins. Management now expects roughly $90 million of full-year structural cost savings, an increase from prior guidance, and anticipates sequential pricing gains in the fourth quarter.
Inflation remains the key variable. The company now projects approximately $170 million of incremental input-cost inflation for the full year, higher than its earlier estimate, which will test the effectiveness of its cost-saving programs. Volume guidance for the fourth quarter sits in a range of down 1% to up 1%.
On the balance sheet, debt reduction stays a priority. Plans call for paying down $400 million to $500 million of debt in 2026 and reaching a net leverage ratio near 4.7x by year-end. Progress here, together with a return to EBITDA growth in 2027, continues to shape the company’s strategy and investor outlook.
