The iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF is a passively managed, market-capitalization-weighted fund that seeks to track the MSCI Emerging Markets Investable Market Index. That index is designed to capture approximately 99% of the free-float market capitalization across large-, mid-, and small-cap equities in global emerging markets, making IEMG one of the broadest single-ticker routes to developing-economy equities.
The fund holds roughly 2,700 securities and uses representative sampling to replicate its benchmark. Its largest positions are concentrated in Asian technology and semiconductor leaders: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (over 11% of assets), Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Tencent, and Alibaba. By sector, information technology dominates at close to 40% of the portfolio, followed by financials (approximately 18–19%), consumer discretionary, industrials, communication services, and materials. Geographically, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and India together represent a substantial majority of exposure, with smaller allocations to Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and other emerging markets.
IEMG carries an expense ratio of 0.09% and was launched in October 2012. Its scale, deep liquidity, and diversified but technology-tilted structure make it a common core building block for international and emerging market allocations. I also checked comparable holdings using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the weighting stacks up against peers.
The emerging markets equity complex has been shaped in recent years by two overlapping forces: the rise of Asia-based semiconductor and technology supply chains, and the broader demand for diversification away from developed-market concentration. Because IEMG is market-cap weighted, its exposure has drifted toward the region's largest technology companies, particularly Taiwan and South Korean chipmakers, whose revenues are closely tied to global artificial intelligence (AI) and memory demand cycles.
The macroeconomic backdrop remains a key swing factor. Emerging market equities are sensitive to US dollar strength, developed-market interest rate policy, and global inflation, all of which influence capital flows into and out of developing economies. Policy developments in China, currency moves in Asia, and commodity price trends in markets such as Brazil and South Africa also feed directly into index performance. This environment has supported strong multi-year returns for technology-heavy emerging markets while simultaneously increasing the index's cyclical and sector concentration risk. From what I see, the semiconductor tilt is worth monitoring closely here.
IEMG's recent behavior reflects the tension between its broad diversification and its concentrated technology tilt. Over the trailing 30 days, the fund declined approximately 8.6%, falling from a closing level near $81 in early October to a most recent close around $74. The move reversed much of the strength seen in late summer, when the fund climbed to an early-September peak above $84.
Over the trailing quarter, the picture is more range-bound. From a late-July close near $78, IEMG has moved within a roughly $74-to-$84 band, ending the period modestly lower. The bulk of the drawdown has been attributable to the fund's largest holdings in the semiconductor complex, where valuation and sentiment swings have a disproportionate effect on the index given the near-40% technology weighting. Financials and consumer discretionary names have provided less offsetting support, underscoring how a handful of mega-cap Asian technology companies now drive a meaningful share of this ETF's daily price action. I’m watching this concentration dynamic closely as it plays out.
Several structural factors are likely to influence IEMG over the remainder of 2026. The trajectory of global semiconductor and memory demand—driven by AI infrastructure spending—will remain central given the fund's dominant technology weighting. Investors should also monitor the path of developed-market interest rates and the US dollar, as both directly affect emerging market capital flows and currency-adjusted returns.
China's policy stance and growth trajectory remain pivotal, as do the earnings cycles of the fund's largest Asian technology holdings. Commodity prices and inflation dynamics will shape returns in resource-heavy markets such as Brazil and South Africa. Finally, the ETF's own rising concentration in a limited number of mega-cap technology names represents both an opportunity during upcycles and a structural risk during drawdowns—making portfolio diversification and position sizing key considerations for investors using this fund as a core allocation.
In my own research process, Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a useful way to scan for related opportunities and compare technical signals across emerging market holdings. It helps surface ideas based on patterns and fundamentals without replacing the core allocation. I find it particularly handy when evaluating how individual names within the technology sector might influence broader ETF movements like those in IEMG.
