Investors comparing IGM and XLK are really choosing between two distinct approaches to the technology sector. Both are passively managed ETFs focused on the same high-growth area, yet their structures set them apart. IGM, the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF, spreads across a wider North American technology landscape that includes select communication services names. XLK, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, delivers a more focused slice of S&P 500 information technology companies. They serve as alternatives, and the decision often comes down to whether an investor values breadth or cost efficiency and tighter sector exposure.
The iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF aims to follow the S&P North American Expanded Technology Sector Index, which covers U.S. and Canadian technology firms along with certain communication services and consumer discretionary companies. This passive fund typically holds 287 to 300 securities, offering broader coverage than many sector peers. Its expense ratio sits at approximately 0.39%.
Leading positions include NVDA, AVGO, AAPL, MSFT, MU, GOOGL, META, AMD, GOOG, and INTC. Information technology accounts for roughly 84% of assets, with communication services making up the remaining 16%. That expanded mandate is what sets IGM apart, bringing in internet and media platforms that stricter technology indexes leave out.
The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund tracks the Technology Select Sector Index, which includes S&P 500 companies classified in information technology. It uses full replication and generally holds 70 to 78 securities, with at least 95% of assets in index components. Its expense ratio is about 0.08%, one of the lowest among technology ETFs. The fund is non-diversified and essentially 100% allocated to information technology.
Top holdings feature NVDA, AAPL, MSFT, AVGO, AMD, MU, PLTR, INTC, CSCO, and LRCX. Semiconductors and related equipment dominate. This setup gives XLK more direct exposure to chip and hardware cycles, though it skips internet-platform names such as Meta and Alphabet.
Both ETFs are positioned within the ongoing artificial intelligence investment cycle that has supported flows into semiconductors, cloud, and data-center infrastructure. Demand for accelerated computing has bolstered results at names like NVDA and AVGO, while cloud and software spending holds steady. Interest rate expectations and regulatory attention on large platforms also influence valuations, with the latter mattering more for IGM due to its communication services holdings. From what I see, main risks for either fund include concentration in a few large names, semiconductor cyclicality, and sensitivity to monetary policy shifts. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
In recent months both ETFs have participated in the technology rally, though their positioning has differed. XLK has gained from heavier semiconductor weightings that have led momentum, delivering stronger trend consistency during AI-driven moves. IGM has shown somewhat lower single-name concentration and slightly reduced volatility thanks to its diversified base and communication services exposure. Over recent cycles, XLK’s concentrated, low-cost design has amplified gains in favorable environments, while IGM’s breadth has offered more balanced positioning across the broader technology and internet space.
