Insteel Industries is the nation's largest manufacturer of steel wire reinforcing products for concrete construction, serving infrastructure, commercial, and data center end markets. Its quarterly results offer a useful read on U.S. nonresidential construction demand and on the raw-material cost pressures rippling through steel-intensive manufacturers. The company entered fiscal 2026 navigating a historically tight domestic wire rod market, elevated tariffs, and softer private construction activity. Against that backdrop, I was watching whether pricing actions could offset rising input costs, and whether infrastructure and data center strength could sustain shipment growth. The fourth quarter therefore mattered not just for the headline numbers, but for what it signaled about margin trajectory and demand heading into fiscal 2027. To compare with peers, I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, which ended October 3, 2026, Insteel reported net sales of $209.3 million, up 17.9% from $177.4 million in the prior-year period. The quarter benefited from a 53-week fiscal year, which added a 14th week to the fourth quarter. On a comparable 13-week basis, shipments rose 2.2% year over year but fell 5.4% sequentially. Average selling prices increased 6.6% from a year ago, reflecting pricing actions aimed at recovering higher steel wire rod, freight, and operating costs.
Profitability, however, lagged. Net earnings were $7.7 million, or $0.40 per diluted share, down from $14.6 million, or $0.74 per diluted share, a year earlier. Gross profit declined to $21.0 million from $28.6 million, and gross margin fell to 10% from 16.1%. Management attributed the compression to a narrower spread between selling prices and raw material costs, higher freight and manufacturing expenses, and lower-than-expected production volumes.
For the full fiscal year, net sales totaled $739.5 million versus $647.7 million in fiscal 2025. Net earnings were $29.5 million ($1.51 diluted EPS), down from $41.0 million ($2.10 diluted EPS) the prior year. Operating activities generated $36.6 million in cash for the year, up from $27.2 million in fiscal 2025.
Shares declined in the wake of the report, as investors weighed the stronger-than-expected revenue against a meaningful earnings miss and further margin erosion. The stock was trading around $30, having fallen roughly 7% over the prior three months, reflecting a market already cautious about the company's cost environment. The profit shortfall reinforced concerns that persistent wire rod supply constraints, higher freight costs, and broad inflation continue to outpace Insteel's pricing actions. While demand signals remained reasonably healthy, the market's negative reaction suggested investors were focused less on shipment growth and more on the durability of margins as the company enters fiscal 2027.
Looking ahead, Insteel signaled a mixed but cautiously constructive demand picture. Publicly funded infrastructure spending remains a solid foundation, and management indicated that data center momentum is expected to continue through 2027. The company also noted early signs of a broader recovery in private nonresidential construction, though housing is expected to remain weak with little prospect of meaningful improvement in 2027.
On the cost side, several factors will be closely watched. Management continues to contend with a domestic supply deficit in hot-rolled steel wire rod, estimated at roughly 1.3 million tons, which has forced greater reliance on offshore sourcing and elevated working capital. The company expects increased benefits in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 from the Upper Sandusky closure and welded wire consolidation, which should support lower costs and improved efficiency.
Investors will likely monitor whether recently announced price increases translate into margin recovery, whether data center shipment delays continue to smooth out, and how any changes in trade policy or Section 232 tariffs affect raw material availability and costs. Margin trajectory, free cash flow generation, and the pace of engineered structural mesh growth are likely to remain the central themes through fiscal 2027.
