Investors following digital assets and AI infrastructure often look at IREN and MARA side by side. Both once competed as large-scale Bitcoin miners and are now moving into the expanding market for AI computing capacity. The comparison is useful for traders weighing a Bitcoin-treasury approach against an AI cloud growth story. Because each company operates at the overlap of cryptocurrency economics and energy-heavy data centers, their relative results offer insight into how quickly a mining operation can repurpose power assets for recurring compute revenue.
IREN Limited, previously known as Iris Energy, has taken clear steps away from Bitcoin mining and toward AI cloud and data center operations. In fiscal 2026 results, the company posted roughly $707 million in total revenue, an increase of about 41% from the prior year, with AI Cloud Services revenue rising sharply to $128.8 million from $16.4 million. Bitcoin mining still accounted for the bulk of revenue at $578.2 million, but management has indicated it intends to largely finish the transition to AI infrastructure by the end of calendar 2026. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Recent share price action shows a mix of interest and caution. The stock has retreated from its 52-week high and declined in recent weeks, partly due to questions around legacy data center sites and a sizable fiscal-year net loss tied to noncash impairments on retired mining equipment. At the same time, positive sentiment has come from named customer relationships, including Microsoft, Cohere, Perplexity, and Figure AI, along with reports of a multiyear cloud agreement with Anthropic. These elements have strengthened IREN’s standing as one of the more advanced mining-to-AI transitions in the sector.
MARA Holdings, formerly Marathon Digital Holdings, continues to rank among the largest public Bitcoin miners by energized hashrate while signaling a wider move into digital infrastructure. In its latest quarter, the company reported revenue of $174.6 million, down 18% year over year, and a net loss of roughly $1.3 billion driven mainly by unrealized losses on Bitcoin holdings. It mined 2,247 Bitcoin during the period and grew energized hashrate to about 72.2 exahashes per second.
Market moves have been uneven. MARA shares have recovered somewhat from 52-week lows but remain well below peaks, with performance closely linked to Bitcoin price changes. Strategically, the company sold a large portion of its Bitcoin treasury—approximately $1.5 billion—to retire convertible debt and agreed to acquire Long Ridge Energy & Power, a 505-megawatt Ohio gas plant, for about $1.5 billion to support an AI and HPC campus. These steps reflect a shift of capital from mining hardware toward energy assets suited for AI workloads.
The most obvious difference lies in how far each company has moved. IREN has repositioned itself as an AI cloud provider, with contracted revenue and named enterprise customers giving clearer visibility. MARA still views Bitcoin mining as its core operation and holds a sizable Bitcoin treasury, leaving earnings more exposed to cryptocurrency prices. In market positioning, IREN trades at a notably higher market capitalization, reflecting investor willingness to price in its AI revenue path.
Growth catalysts also diverge. IREN’s focus is turning contracted capacity into recognized revenue and expanding GPU deployments, while MARA’s depends on signing AI tenants and monetizing its power assets. On the risk side, IREN carries heavy capital expenditures and execution risk, whereas MARA faces Bitcoin volatility, cash burn, and an AI pipeline that remains unproven.
Based on the factors at hand, Tickeron’s AI would likely lean toward IREN right now. The company shows steadier progress toward a durable revenue base, backed by named customers and contracted annualized run-rate revenue that supports a more consistent fundamental story than MARA’s Bitcoin-linked results. While IREN still carries meaningful execution and capital-spending risk, its positioning aligns more closely with the AI infrastructure demand trend. In contrast, MARA’s near-term outlook stays more dependent on Bitcoin price recovery and successful commercialization of its AI assets. This view is probabilistic and should be weighed alongside each investor’s own research and risk tolerance.
