The iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF is a passively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the MSCI USA Momentum SR Variant Index. The index selects large- and mid-cap U.S. equities with relatively strong price momentum, based on six- and twelve-month risk-adjusted performance, and rebalances semiannually in May and November. The fund holds roughly 129 securities, carries an expense ratio of 0.15%, and manages approximately $17 billion in assets under management.
The portfolio is heavily concentrated in Information Technology, which accounts for roughly half of assets, followed by Industrials, Financials, and Health Care. As of the latest reporting, its largest holdings include AMD, Micron Technology, Intel, Broadcom, Cisco Systems, Applied Materials, and Lam Research, alongside Caterpillar, Johnson & Johnson, and GE Vernova. This semiconductor- and technology-heavy tilt explains why the fund is acutely sensitive to swings in AI-driven growth expectations. I also checked the holdings breakdown using Tickeron’s AI Screener to compare sector weights with peers.
MTUM declined approximately 19.6% over the last 30 days, falling from about $79.33 to roughly $63.76. The move was not gradual: much of the loss arrived in a single session, when the fund slid roughly 8% in its worst day since the 2020 pandemic crash. Over the trailing three-month period, the fund is down about 17.5%, reflecting a top formed in early October followed by an accelerating unwind.
The price action has been distinctly trend-reversing and volatile rather than range-bound. After rallying for much of the year, momentum leadership snapped abruptly, with selling intensifying into early November. The pattern is characteristic of a crowded factor position being unwound rapidly as the underlying leadership rotates.
The primary driver was a violent repricing of the AI trade. Semiconductor shares, which anchor MTUM's portfolio, slid into a bear market, and bellwether NVIDIA fell more than 9% in a single session, erasing its gains for the year. The Nasdaq 100 dropped more than 6% on the same day, its steepest decline since March 2020.
Several forces compounded the move. Investor scrutiny of the sustainability of heavy AI capital spending intensified following major hyperscaler earnings reports. A decisive midterm election outcome raised questions about the pace of data-center buildouts and potential policy shifts affecting the technology sector. At the same time, crowded positioning and forced deleveraging among hedge funds amplified the selling, with momentum logging its largest single-month underperformance relative to the broad market in more than four decades. From what I see, reviewing similar factor rotations with Tickeron’s AI Trend Prediction Engine helped put the speed of this unwind in context.
The broader three-month trend reflects a rotation away from prior market leadership rather than a single event. After leading the market through the first half of the year, momentum and technology growth names gave way to quality, value, and cyclical segments. This rotation was punctuated by rising concerns over AI infrastructure spending, elevated valuations among semiconductor leaders, and a broadening of market breadth away from a narrow group of mega-cap winners.
Because MTUM mechanically holds recent winners, the reversal of those winners hit the fund disproportionately. Institutional flows out of momentum strategies and into lower-volatility and equal-weight approaches reinforced the drawdown. The fund's November semiannual index rebalance may also shift its composition toward cyclicals and value-oriented names, further reshaping its exposure profile.
Looking ahead, several themes are likely to shape MTUM. The durability of AI capital spending and hyperscaler guidance will remain central, given the fund's semiconductor concentration. Semiconductor earnings, pricing power, and memory-market dynamics will also influence the largest holdings. Interest-rate expectations and inflation data matter because momentum and long-duration growth equities are sensitive to shifts in discount rates.
Investors should also monitor the November index rebalance, which may materially alter sector exposure, and any policy or regulatory developments affecting the technology and data-center buildout. Finally, the historical tendency for momentum reversals to be followed by either a rebound in prior leaders or the emergence of new leadership suggests that breadth, factor spreads, and institutional positioning will be key signals to watch in the months ahead.
I often rely on Tickeron’s AI Screener when analyzing factor ETFs and sector rotations like the one unfolding in momentum strategies. The platform lets me scan thousands of securities with technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, and AI-generated signals in one workflow. It has helped me quickly surface comparable holdings and evaluate risk profiles during fast-moving market shifts without manual effort.
