Johnson Controls International plc (JCI) is a stock with broad sell-side coverage. The $175 central target used here is the arithmetic mean of 22 current analyst price targets, which average about $174.85, rounded to $175. The target range is wide, roughly $136 at the low end to $201 at the high end, signaling meaningful divergence in how analysts value the shares. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Recent post-earnings revisions cluster above the mean. Wells Fargo lifted its target to $200, Bernstein to $190, Morgan Stanley and UBS to $180, while BofA and Argus sit near $175 and Baird near $172. More cautious views include Citi at $170 and Mizuho at $165, while the lowest targets sit near the mid-$130s. Analysts generally justify higher targets with data-center demand, a record backlog, and upward EPS revisions, whereas neutral ratings emphasize a full valuation and the need to convert backlog into revenue.
With the stock near $149, reaching $175 requires roughly a 17% move, which is substantial rather than trivial. The path would likely depend on continued conversion of the record backlog and sustained order growth in data centers and other mission-critical verticals.
The company closed fiscal 2026 with organic revenue growth above 8% and adjusted EPS up 37%. For fiscal 2027, management guided to 11% to 12% organic revenue growth and adjusted EPS of $6.15 to $6.30, about 21% growth at the midpoint. Valuation is a consideration: the trailing P/E ratio is near the low 30s, so a move toward the target would require either continued earnings growth or stable-to-higher multiples rather than multiple compression.
The core support is demand visibility. In fiscal Q4 2026, orders increased 44% and backlog grew 43% to a record $23 billion, driven by data-center cooling and thermal equipment such as chillers, CDUs, and cold plates. Management said 70% to 80% of that backlog is expected to convert to revenue within 12 months. Adjusted EBIT margin expanded 300 basis points to 18%, and the company is guiding to operating leverage above 30%. After divesting its residential and light-commercial HVAC business to Bosch, the company is more focused on commercial HVAC and fire-and-security services, which analysts view as a cleaner, higher-growth profile. From what I see, the data-center tailwinds remain the clearest catalyst here.
The largest obstacle is valuation: at a premium trailing multiple, any slowdown in orders, margin pressure, or sector rotation could compress the multiple even if earnings grow. Management also acknowledged that customers face power and electrical infrastructure constraints that can delay delivery, and a meaningful share of forecasted savings from a roughly $400 million restructuring program will not arrive until fiscal 2029. A planned increase in capital expenditure to about $900 million and lower free-cash-flow conversion of about 95% add execution risk, while sub-cyclical security-services growth and a challenged Middle East market remain soft spots. I’m watching this closely because execution on the backlog will be key.
JCI traded near $149 after pulling back from a recent close around $155 following the October 27 earnings report. The stock's 52-week range is roughly $108 to $160, so the $160 area, near its prior highs, is a key resistance level to clear before any sustained move toward $175. On the downside, the mid-$140s and the psychological $140 level are notable support zones. A sustained advance would require breaking above the prior-high region with strong volume.
Analyst price targets typically reflect a roughly 12-month research horizon, though firms do not state identical timeframes. Key items to monitor include the fiscal Q1 2027 results expected around February, where management guided to 12% to 14% organic revenue growth and adjusted EPS of $1.15 to $1.20; ongoing data-center order trends; backlog conversion; margin trajectory; and any analyst target revisions following each quarterly report. Macro conditions that affect construction, cooling demand, and interest rates also matter.
