Johnson Controls International stands out as a key player in smart building solutions, with an expanding role in commercial HVAC and data center cooling. As AI infrastructure continues to scale, the company's cooling and building-automation offerings have emerged as important growth areas. This quarter wraps up fiscal 2026 and provides an early look at the outlook for 2027 through updated guidance. I was particularly interested to see whether the record backlog and rising orders would support ongoing revenue growth and margin improvement, and whether management would signal that the AI-related demand trend still has further room to develop.
For the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 30, 2026, JCI posted revenue of $7.11 billion, an increase of roughly 10% year over year that also topped the consensus estimate of about $7.04 billion. Organic revenue advanced 12%, supported by strength in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, though this was partly offset by a modest decline in EMEA.
Adjusted EPS reached $1.66, exceeding the $1.58 consensus. On a GAAP basis, earnings were $1.60 per share, with net income attributable to Johnson Controls at $967 million. The year-over-year drop in GAAP results largely stems from the prior-year benefit tied to discontinued operations.
Operating trends stayed positive. Organic orders rose 44% year over year, pushing backlog to a record $23 billion, up 43% on an organic basis. Operating cash flow came in at $1.3 billion for the quarter, with free cash flow near $1.1 billion. For the full fiscal year, organic revenue grew more than 8%, accompanied by double-digit adjusted EPS growth. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Investors reacted positively to the results and outlook. JCI shares rose in pre-market trading on October 27 after the release, showing relief that the company delivered both an earnings beat and fiscal 2027 guidance well above consensus. Sentiment ahead of the report had already been favorable, with several analysts lifting price targets in recent weeks and highlighting the company's shift toward an HVAC focus positioned for data center growth. The softer EMEA performance remains a point to watch, yet the combination of top- and bottom-line beats, record backlog, and an above-consensus outlook helped reinforce confidence in the AI-driven demand narrative.
JCI enters fiscal 2027 with solid momentum. Management guided to full-year adjusted EPS of $6.15 to $6.30 and organic revenue growth of 11% to 12%, both well above analyst expectations at the time. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company projects adjusted EPS of $1.15 to $1.20 and organic revenue growth of 12% to 14%.
Several elements will influence how this guidance unfolds. Backlog conversion will be key, as the record $23 billion backlog must turn into revenue at healthy margins, and investors will monitor whether data center and other commercial projects sustain above-average profitability. Demand signals, especially order intake from hyperscale data center operators, will also matter as AI capacity expands. Regional performance deserves attention given the EMEA softness in the latest quarter. Cost, supply-chain, and productivity initiatives will help determine whether margin expansion continues across the three segments. While the outlook appears strong, execution on the elevated backlog and sustained customer demand will be the main test ahead.
