LeonaBio, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company headquartered in the Seattle, Washington area that develops novel small-molecule therapies for diseases with high unmet medical need. The company was formerly known as Athira Pharma and changed its name to LeonaBio in January 2026 after acquiring global rights to its lead oncology asset.
Its lead drug candidate, lasofoxifene, is a next-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) being evaluated in the Phase 3 ELAINE-3 trial in combination with abemaciclib for estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative, ESR1-mutated metastatic breast cancer. The company's second candidate, brelgometon (formerly ATH-1105), is an orally available therapy in development for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Investors follow LONA primarily for its oncology pipeline, given the potentially large addressable market for ESR1-mutated breast cancer, a genetically defined population with limited treatment options after disease progression. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the last 30 days, LONA has fallen approximately 55%, declining from a closing price near $7.83 to around $3.52. The stock had traded in a range of roughly $6 to $9 through much of August before breaking down decisively in late September, when it lost more than 15% on September 24, about 35% on September 25, and a further double-digit decline on September 28.
The quarterly trend is similarly negative. From a level near $9.19 at the end of June, shares have dropped more than 60%, reflecting a sustained repricing that accelerated sharply in the final weeks of the quarter. The selloff pushed LONA well below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages and toward the lower end of its 52-week range.
The dominant catalyst behind the recent decline was the company's decision to open a warrant exercise window. On September 25, LeonaBio initiated an exercise period for Series A warrants covering approximately 23 million common shares at an exercise price of $6.35 per share, running through October 19, 2026. The move could generate up to roughly $146 million in gross proceeds but also introduced a meaningful prospective share-issuance overhang, prompting investors to reprice the stock sharply lower.
This dilution concern overshadowed otherwise encouraging clinical updates. During the period, LeonaBio reported that its Phase 3 ELAINE-3 trial had enrolled 495 patients and remained on track to complete enrollment of approximately 600 participants in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company also disclosed second-quarter results showing a narrower-than-expected loss of $0.80 per share versus a consensus estimate of $1.12.
On the analyst front, Piper Sandler reiterated an Overweight rating with a $20 price target, while Mizuho maintained an Outperform rating with a $15 target. These positive views did not prevent the selloff, as near-term financing dynamics took precedence over longer-term pipeline potential.
The broader multi-month decline reflects a combination of structural factors. As a pre-revenue clinical-stage company, LeonaBio generates no product revenue and relies on financing to fund development. In December 2025, the company completed a $90 million private placement alongside its lasofoxifene license agreement, with warrants exercisable for up to an additional $146 million. The eventual exercise of those warrants was always a potential source of dilution, and the September opening of the exercise window brought that overhang into focus.
At the same time, rising research and development spending tied to the ELAINE-3 trial has increased cash burn. The company ended June 2026 with $51.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and investments, down from $88.3 million at the end of 2025. Against this backdrop, shares declined steadily through the quarter even as clinical milestones remained on schedule.
The most important near-term factor is the outcome of the warrant exercise window, which closes October 19, 2026. The number of shares ultimately issued and the resulting capital raised will shape both the company's balance sheet and its share count.
Looking further ahead, investors will monitor completion of enrollment in the Phase 3 ELAINE-3 trial, expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by topline data anticipated in the second half of 2027. Additional catalysts include updates on the brelgometon ALS program, quarterly cash-burn trends, and any changes in analyst ratings or price targets. As with all clinical-stage biotechs, trial outcomes and regulatory developments remain the central drivers of long-term value. From what I see, keeping an eye on these milestones will be key.
