Lockheed Martin stands as one of the largest aerospace and defense contractors globally, with operations spanning four main segments: Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, Rotary and Mission Systems, and Space. Flagship programs include the F-35 Lightning II, PAC-3 and THAAD interceptors, GMLRS and PrSM missiles, Sikorsky helicopters, and the Next Generation Interceptor. Its scale, exposure to classified work, and established ties with the U.S. Department of Defense and allies provide a solid competitive edge. I follow the stock closely for its backlog levels, free cash flow profile, dividend consistency, and sensitivity to defense budgets and geopolitical shifts. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the past 30 days, LMT shares advanced roughly 25%, moving from a close near $509.25 on September 30 to about $636.95 on October 30. Most of the advance occurred in late October after the earnings release and subsequent analyst commentary.
The broader quarter showed more fluctuation. The stock traded in the high $500s to low $600s early in the period before dipping toward $505 in early October. The rebound brought it back near $637, resulting in a trailing three-month gain of roughly 9% to 11%, with nearly all of it occurring in the final weeks.
The primary catalyst came with the third-quarter 2026 earnings report on October 22. Adjusted EPS came in at $7.97 versus the $7.52 consensus, while revenue climbed 11% year over year to $20.7 billion, topping the expected $20.5 billion. Net earnings rose 14% to approximately $1.85 billion.
Management raised full-year guidance for the second straight quarter, setting adjusted EPS at $30.35–$30.75, revenue at $80 billion–$82 billion, and free cash flow at $7.8 billion–$8.0 billion. The company also posted a record $292 billion backlog, up 27% sequentially, which included a $52.5 billion multiyear PAC-3 award. Missiles and Fire Control posted 24% sales growth, and Aeronautics revenue increased 13% on higher F-35 volume. From what I see, the 10-year framework agreement for 850 F-35 jets at a sustained rate of 156 aircraft per year provided additional visibility. Morgan Stanley then upgraded the stock to Overweight with a new $835 price target, up from $690, citing lower F-35 risk and durable multiyear demand. The shares rose about 7% on the earnings day and continued higher even as the broader market lagged.
The quarter reflected a shift in sentiment more than a straight-line climb. Through August and September, the stock moved lower amid questions around near-term F-35 timing and general market caution, reaching a low near $505 in early October. The tone changed sharply in late October once the strong results, record backlog, and F-35 framework agreement highlighted accelerating demand and better cash generation.
Defense peers such as RTX and Northrop Grumman also benefited from higher global spending, though LMT showed sharper single-day moves tied to its specific catalysts. The combination of multiyear missile contracts and the F-35 agreement gave investors more confidence in sustained revenue.
Several items merit attention in the coming months. Fourth-quarter 2026 results are due in January 2027, along with initial 2027 guidance, where the sales outlook will be especially important. Final F-35 pricing, production schedules, and awards under the new framework still require congressional approval and funding.
Other factors include the pace of missile and interceptor ramps, free cash flow conversion rates, execution on fixed-price and classified programs, and any cost pressures on F-35 Lot 20. Broader U.S. and allied defense budgets, geopolitical events, and sector demand for munitions will also influence the outlook. These elements remain uncertain and are not a basis for specific investment recommendations.
In my view, incorporating AI-driven platforms has become a practical part of reviewing defense names like LMT. I recently used Tickeron’s AI Trend Prediction Engine to cross-check momentum signals against historical patterns in the sector, which helped frame the recent backlog strength in a longer context. It offers a straightforward way to compare multiple stocks without replacing core fundamental work.
