As the world’s largest defense contractor, Lockheed Martin’s quarterly results offer a useful window into global defense spending and production trends across aircraft, missiles, and space systems. The third-quarter report comes at a time of strong demand for munitions and missile defense, with the company ramping output on programs such as PAC-3 and THAAD. Investors were looking for evidence that record orders are converting into revenue, profit, and cash flow. The numbers show double-digit growth and a raised outlook, which reinforces confidence in the multi-year trajectory.
For the third quarter of 2026, ended September 27, Lockheed Martin posted sales of $20.71 billion, an 11% increase from $18.61 billion in the prior-year period and ahead of consensus near $20.48 billion. Diluted earnings per share came in at $7.97, up from $6.95 a year ago and roughly $0.45 above analyst expectations of $7.52. Net earnings increased 14% to $1.80 billion.
Growth was broad-based across all four segments. Aeronautics sales rose 13% on higher F-35 production and sustainment volume, while Missiles and Fire Control surged 24%, fueled by production ramps for PAC-3, THAAD, GMLRS, and PrSM. Rotary and Mission Systems grew 3%, and Space advanced 4%. Total backlog climbed to a record $292 billion, including a multi-year PAC-3 award, providing long-term revenue visibility. Cash from operations was $3.4 billion, while free cash flow was $3.0 billion, down modestly from $3.3 billion a year earlier.
Management also lifted its full-year outlook, now guiding to sales of $80 billion to $82 billion and diluted EPS of $30.35 to $30.75, with free cash flow expected between $7.8 billion and $8.0 billion.
From what I see, the backlog growth stands out as a particularly important signal for future quarters.
Investors responded favorably to the beat-and-raise quarter. Shares traded higher intraday on October 22, rising roughly 4.9% to near $578 as of midday, extending a recovery that followed a mixed stretch of earlier quarters. The positive reaction reflects not only the top- and bottom-line beats but also the significance of the raised guidance and record backlog. Sentiment was tempered somewhat by a slight year-over-year decline in free cash flow and questions around the timing of an F-35 lot award, which management indicated has shifted into 2027. Still, the overall tone leaned constructive, as the results demonstrated that surging munitions demand is now flowing through to financial performance.

Following this report, investors will be watching several factors that could shape Lockheed Martin’s trajectory into 2027.
First, the timing of the F-35 Lot 20 production award remains a key variable. Management noted that signing the award this year would represent upside to nearly every 2026 metric, but it is not currently embedded in guidance. Any movement on that contract could influence near-term revenue and cash flow.
Second, budget dynamics in Washington bear watching. Fiscal 2027 has opened under a continuing resolution, which affects the timing of new program starts rather than the overall direction of demand. Defense appropriations and reconciliation outcomes could determine how much additional funding reaches munitions and missile defense priorities.
Third, margin and cash flow quality will remain in focus. While segment operating margins held firm, the company has flagged that certain tax favorability may not repeat, making execution and working capital management important going forward. Management expects all four segments to grow in 2027, and the pending closure of the Ultra Maritime acquisition could further shape the outlook.
