MARA Holdings, Inc., formerly Marathon Digital Holdings, is an energy and digital infrastructure company headquartered in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The business monetizes excess and underutilized power through Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence compute, while optimizing power management and supporting AI inference applications. Once a pure-play Bitcoin miner, MARA has repositioned itself as a vertically integrated energy and high-performance computing operator, with assets spanning North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. Investors follow the stock for its high-beta exposure to Bitcoin prices as well as its emerging optionality in AI and energy infrastructure. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the 30 days through late October, MARA shares fell roughly 39.7%, declining from a closing price of $11.23 to $6.77. The decline was broad and persistent, with the stock making a series of lower highs as sentiment around Bitcoin weakened and on-chain activity raised questions about treasury sales.
The trailing quarter told a similar but more volatile story. From about $11.75 in early August, the stock dropped approximately 42% to $6.77 by the end of October. That move included a sharp rally in mid-September, when shares climbed above $13, followed by a steep reversal that erased those gains and carried the stock to its lowest levels of the period. The pattern highlights how quickly MARA can reprice in response to changes in Bitcoin and broader risk appetite. From what I see, reviewing historical patterns on Tickeron’s AI Pattern Search Engine adds useful context to these swings.
The most direct driver was the pullback in Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency retreated toward $76,500 in late October, leaving it roughly 34.5% below its October 2025 all-time high and lower on the month, which directly pressured the value of MARA's holdings and its mining economics. Management has previously indicated that every $10,000 change in Bitcoin's price translates to about $350 million in non-cash impact on the company's results.
Compounding the pressure, on-chain trackers flagged large Bitcoin transfers from MARA-linked wallets during October: approximately 996 BTC (about $81.1 million) moved to a Galaxy Digital address, and another 1,000 BTC (about $82.8 million) was deposited to Binance and Gate over a five-day stretch. While these moves did not confirm sales, they reinforced concerns that MARA was selling down its treasury to fund operations and debt.
The weakness extended across the sector. In the week from October 6 to October 13, peer miners fell in tandem: CleanSpark dropped about 17.4%, Riot Platforms declined 11.9%, and Hut 8 lost 9.3%, while the S&P 500 was essentially flat.
The multi-month decline reflects deeper fundamental headwinds. Second-quarter revenue came in at $175 million, down from $239 million a year earlier, and the company posted a $611 million net loss, including roughly $343 million from marking its digital assets to market. Management also disclosed it had added $600 million in Bitcoin-backed borrowings, leaving about 54% of its holdings pledged as collateral.
At the same time, MARA has been aggressively selling Bitcoin to fund its balance sheet and its expansion. The company sold roughly 23,093 BTC in the first half of 2026 for about $1.6 billion, including 15,133 BTC in March to repurchase convertible debt.
The strategic counterweight is MARA's pivot into AI and energy infrastructure. The company is pursuing a power portfolio of roughly 4.8 gigawatts, anchored by the pending Long Ridge acquisition, which requires FERC approval, and an earlier joint venture with Starwood Digital Ventures targeting up to 2.5 gigawatts of IT capacity. These initiatives underpin the bull case, but they remain largely unproven on contracted cash flow.
Several catalysts could shape MARA's path in the coming months. The company's third-quarter results, expected around November 11, should clarify how much of the October Bitcoin transfers represented actual sales and how mining economics held up. Investors are also watching for FERC approval of the Long Ridge acquisition and for progress on AI and high-performance computing lease signings, which management has said it hopes to advance before year-end. Bitcoin's price direction, the management of Bitcoin-backed debt and collateral, and the pace of the AI infrastructure buildout remain the key variables to monitor. I'm watching this closely as the next earnings release approaches.
