Meta Platforms reported results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, on October 21, 2026. As the parent of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, Meta is one of the world's largest digital advertising platforms, and its quarterly earnings serve as a bellwether for broader internet advertising demand and for investor appetite around heavy artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure spending. This report carried added significance because it marked the first full quarter following the launch of Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, while also absorbing a major multi-state legal settlement. Investors were closely watching whether strong ad momentum and emerging AI monetization could offset surging capex and a deteriorating headline operating margin. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Meta delivered total revenue of $64.60 billion in the third quarter of 2026, an increase of 26% year over year and ahead of the consensus estimate of approximately $63.34 billion. Advertising revenue reached $63.06 billion, up 26%, while the Family of Apps segment generated $64.16 billion in revenue. The company reported Family Daily Active People of 3.64 billion, up 3% year over year.
On a GAAP basis, net income surged 264% to $9.86 billion, and diluted EPS rose to $3.83 from $1.05 a year earlier. However, reported operating income fell 37% to $12.99 billion, and the operating margin narrowed to 20% from 40% a year ago. The primary driver was a $9.89 billion charge recorded in connection with a settlement reached with 52 U.S. state attorneys general over teen mental health and social media litigation. Excluding this item, operating income would have been $22.88 billion and diluted EPS $7.40, beating consensus. Reality Labs posted revenue of $443 million and a narrowed operating loss of $4.13 billion.
Meta guided fourth-quarter 2026 revenue to a range of $73 billion to $76 billion, with a midpoint of $74.5 billion, above the roughly $73.65 billion consensus. The company also tightened full-year 2026 capex guidance to $135 billion–$145 billion, from a prior $130 billion–$145 billion, while reporting quarterly capex of $34.91 billion and negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion. From what I see, the underlying ad trends remain the key positive here.
Meta shares initially rose more than 4% in after-hours trading following the report, with the gain later narrowing to roughly 2.9% as investors weighed the record revenue and upbeat guidance against the one-time legal charge and negative free cash flow. The market's response suggested that investors focused on the underlying strength of the advertising business and the better-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue outlook, while largely looking past the non-recurring litigation expense. Sentiment was further supported by management's commentary on early traction for the Muse AI agent, which surpassed 10 million users in the U.S. and Canada within its first month and a half. At the same time, the sharp rise in capex and the shift to negative free cash flow remained key areas of investor scrutiny. I’m watching this closely as the reaction highlights how non-recurring items can temporarily obscure core performance.
Looking ahead, investors will be watching several themes that emerged from this report. The most immediate is whether Meta can sustain its roughly 26% revenue growth into the seasonally strong fourth quarter, where management has guided to $73 billion–$76 billion in revenue. Advertising demand, particularly in video and AI-driven ad delivery, will remain the central growth engine to monitor.
A second area of focus is spending. Meta narrowed its full-year 2026 capex guidance to $135 billion–$145 billion and reported negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion for the quarter, reflecting heavy investment in AI and data centers. Management has indicated it expects the Reality Labs full-year loss to land between $18 billion and $19 billion in 2026 and to narrow to roughly $15 billion in 2027 as investment is reallocated toward priority areas such as AI.
Finally, the early monetization of Muse and other AI products will be closely tracked, given management's emphasis on scaling the product, growing revenue, and optimizing compute costs. Combined with the resolution of the teen mental health litigation, these factors will shape how investors evaluate Meta's profitability trajectory and the durability of its growth in the quarters ahead.
