Methanex is the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol, a key industrial chemical used in fuels, plastics, and construction materials. Profitability ties closely to global methanol prices and natural gas costs, making its quarterly results a useful gauge for chemical and energy markets. The third quarter played out against ongoing methanol supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict, which have helped support prices even as the company’s average realized price eased slightly from the prior period. Following the 2025 acquisitions of Beaumont and Natgasoline, investors are focused on how effectively the expanded asset base converts favorable pricing into cash flow, debt reduction, and shareholder returns.
For the third quarter of 2026, Methanex posted net income attributable to shareholders of $265 million, or $3.42 per diluted share, compared with $198 million, or $2.45 per share, in the second quarter. The sequential gain largely reflected the absence of an asset impairment charge from the prior quarter, partly offset by a lower average realized price. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $543 million, down from $577 million, while adjusted net income declined to $284 million from $300 million. Revenue reached approximately $1.388 billion, just below the prior quarter’s $1.395 billion yet above consensus estimates near $1.3 billion. Adjusted earnings per share of $3.69 exceeded the roughly $2.86 consensus figure.
Total methanol sales volume increased to 2,595,000 tonnes from 2,555,000 tonnes, driven by higher sales of produced methanol (2,279,000 tonnes versus 2,151,000 tonnes). Production totaled 2,143,000 tonnes, down from 2,213,000 tonnes, as record North American output was offset by lower volumes in Chile and the idling of the Titan plant in Trinidad. Methanex entered the third-quarter report with solid momentum, supported by elevated methanol prices tied to Middle East supply issues and a larger production footprint. The results delivered a clear beat on both revenue and adjusted earnings versus consensus, underscoring management’s ability to turn favorable industry conditions into stronger financial performance. At the same time, investors are balancing moderating realized prices against guidance for a sequential rebound in the fourth quarter. Attention is also turning to the decision to sell remaining New Zealand natural gas entitlements and indefinitely idle New Zealand production in early 2027, along with the newly approved share-buyback program that signals confidence in the balance sheet and free cash flow.
Management offered an upbeat near-term outlook, expecting higher Adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter of 2026. Based on October and November posted prices and current spot pricing, the company projects an average realized price range of approximately $525 to $550 per tonne for those two months. For the full year, Methanex continues to anticipate production of roughly 9.0 million tonnes of methanol (Methanex interest) and 0.3 million tonnes of ammonia, with quarterly variability linked to gas availability, turnarounds, and unplanned outages.
Several factors deserve close attention in the quarters ahead. The path of global methanol prices, especially the duration of Middle East supply disruptions, remains the largest variable for revenue and margins. Natural gas costs and availability will continue to influence production economics, particularly in Chile. The planned idling of New Zealand facilities and sale of remaining natural gas entitlements mark a strategic shift that could trim future volumes but improve long-term cost positioning. Balance sheet and capital allocation decisions are another focus area. Methanex ended the quarter with a cash balance of $912 million and access to a $400 million revolving credit facility, and it provided notice to redeem $300 million of its existing $700 million bonds due in October 2027. With the 5% normal course issuer bid now authorized, the pace of buybacks alongside ongoing debt reduction and the regular quarterly dividend will be worth monitoring.
