NerdWallet operates a financial guidance marketplace that connects consumers and small and mid-sized businesses with lending, banking, and insurance products. Its quarterly results offer a real-time read on demand across consumer finance verticals, as well as on how effectively the company is adapting to shifting search traffic. Over recent quarters, the business has leaned on performance marketing to offset persistent declines in organic search, a strategy that has supported revenue but raised questions about profitability. The third-quarter report therefore matters to investors because it tests whether faster top-line growth can translate into durable earnings, or whether rising acquisition costs are eroding the margin story that had previously underpinned the stock. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
For the third quarter of fiscal 2026 ended September 30, NerdWallet reported total revenue of $239.6 million, an 11% increase from $215.1 million a year earlier, though the figure landed below the consensus estimate of roughly $251.7 million. GAAP net income was $14.9 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, down from $0.34 per share in the prior-year quarter and short of the analyst expectation of about $0.34–$0.35 per share.
Profitability weakened meaningfully. GAAP income from operations declined 44% year over year to $19.4 million, while non-GAAP operating income fell 27% to $30.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA dropped 26% to $39.8 million, with the adjusted EBITDA margin compressing to 17% from 25%. The main pressure came from sales and marketing expense, which rose 28% to $173.2 million as the company spent more to acquire customers across its marketplace.
By segment, consumer revenue increased 12% to $214.5 million, driven by a $25.0 million gain in student loans, reflecting higher federal borrowing limits, the peak summer lending season, and the College Finance acquisition. Personal loans added $13.3 million and deposit accounts contributed $8.6 million. These gains were partially offset by a $17.4 million decline in auto insurance products on lower lead volume. SMB revenue rose 6% to $25.1 million, helped by stronger business loan originations despite continued organic search pressures.
For the fourth quarter, NerdWallet guided revenue to $191–$203 million and non-GAAP operating income to $9–$15 million. For the full year, the company now expects non-GAAP operating income of $85–$91 million, narrowed and lowered from its prior outlook.
NerdWallet's third-quarter results drew a cautious reception. The combination of a revenue miss, a meaningful earnings-per-share shortfall, and another reduction to the full-year profitability outlook weighed on sentiment, even as revenue growth accelerated from earlier in the year. Investors focused on the widening gap between top-line growth and rising marketing costs, with sales and marketing spending climbing faster than the incremental revenue it generated. Management's acknowledgment that its auto insurance partner network remains too narrow—and that a fix is not expected in the fourth quarter—added to concerns that the insurance headwind may be more structural than temporary. The softer fourth-quarter revenue guide, which implies a year-over-year decline at the midpoint, reinforced a more defensive tone around the shares following the release.
Looking ahead, NerdWallet signaled an intent to grow revenue again in 2027, but warned that the first quarter will face its toughest year-over-year comparison. Investors should watch whether strength in student loans and personal loans can be sustained beyond seasonal and acquisition-driven benefits, and whether auto insurance can stabilize as the company works to broaden its carrier network.
Margins remain the central question. Management plans to increase investment in longer-payback vertical integration and AI-related projects next year, which it expects will pressure non-GAAP operating income in the near term. Monitoring the pace of sales and marketing spending relative to revenue growth will be key to assessing whether the company can restore profit leverage. From what I see, this is important because it highlights the balance between growth investments and profitability.
Finally, capital allocation and cash generation deserve attention. Trailing-twelve-month adjusted free cash flow stood at $129.1 million, though buybacks slowed during the quarter. How management balances reinvestment, acquisitions, and shareholder returns against a thinner profitability cushion will shape the narrative in the quarters ahead. I’m watching this closely as the company navigates these trade-offs.
