Philip Morris International (PM) ranks among the largest tobacco companies globally, with sales spanning roughly 170 markets. Its core lineup centers on Marlboro, the leading international cigarette brand, paired with a fast-growing lineup of smoke-free options. Since 2008, the company has poured more than $16 billion into smoke-free development, anchored by the IQOS heat-not-burn platform, ZYN nicotine pouches, and VEEV e-vapor products.
This shift toward smoke-free offerings forms a central part of the investment case. In the third quarter, those products represented more than 40% of net revenue, reflecting steady progress away from traditional cigarettes. Investors track the name for its pricing strength, robust free cash flow, and a dividend that management has increased for 19 straight years. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
From late September through late October, PM shares moved from a close of $187.46 to $208.79, for a gain of about 11.4%. The path was not perfectly smooth, with a short dip around the earnings release before the stock pushed to multi-month highs.
The trailing quarter showed a comparable overall advance of roughly 11%, though the pattern differed. Shares traded mostly between $182 and $195 through August and September, with an early-September low near $182.53. Most of the quarterly lift occurred in the October breakout after earnings, underscoring how results and the dividend action influenced sentiment.
Third-quarter 2026 results, released October 21, served as the main catalyst. Philip Morris International (PM) reported adjusted diluted EPS of $2.36, up 5.4% year over year and ahead of estimates, alongside net revenue of $11.4 billion, up 5.5% reported and 7.1% organically. Adjusted operating income rose 9.6% to $5.1 billion, the first time it exceeded $5 billion, while the adjusted operating margin reached 44.7%.
Growth appeared across segments. IQOS adjusted in-market sales increased 7.1%, or 10% when excluding Japan and Poland headwinds, while VEEV e-vapor shipments jumped 61.6%. In the U.S., ZYN shipments rose 4.2%. The combustible business held steady, with volumes roughly flat against industry declines and pricing up 8.9%, allowing Marlboro to hit a record 11.4% category share.
The board lifted the quarterly dividend 8.8% to $1.60 per share. Shares slipped briefly on geopolitical cost worries and U.S. investment plans, yet the market soon emphasized the stronger fundamentals, carrying the stock higher into month-end.
The multi-month picture reflects growing conviction in the smoke-free transition. IQOS continued to expand geographically with double-digit adjusted in-market sales growth outside Japan and Poland, while ZYN reached 62 markets internationally. VEEV strengthened its European position and entered South Korea.
The combustible segment showed notable resilience, delivering flat volumes and solid pricing that support growth investments. The company also reported more than $2 billion in cumulative gross cost savings since 2024, hitting a three-year target early. Offsetting factors included energy inflation tied to Middle East tensions and Ukraine supply issues, which management estimates trimmed full-year adjusted EPS growth by about one percentage point.
Several elements will influence the outlook. Management anticipates faster international smoke-free growth in the fourth quarter, though IQOS shipment growth may lag adjusted in-market sales due to Japan pricing shifts. The ZYN move to 20-pouch cans at a lower per-pouch price, plus higher fourth-quarter U.S. spending, should pressure near-term margins.
Investors will also track energy inflation from Middle East conflicts and Ukraine disruptions, both flagged as headwinds. Regulatory and tax moves in markets such as Japan, Germany, and Poland stay relevant, along with the durability of the dividend backed by free cash flow. These items will clarify whether smoke-free momentum sustains share-price gains. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Trend Prediction Engine to gauge potential price paths.
