The ProShares Nasdaq-100 Dorsey Wright Momentum ETF seeks investment results, before fees and expenses, that track the Nasdaq-100 Dorsey Wright Momentum Index. That index selects roughly 21 to 22 non-financial companies from the Nasdaq-100 that rank highest on Dorsey Wright's proprietary relative-strength momentum methodology, and weights them approximately equally at each quarterly reconstitution. The fund is passively managed but employs a rules-based, thematic momentum strategy, and it is classified as non-diversified.
QQQA carries a net expense ratio of 0.58% and a comparatively small asset base, with assets under management in the tens of millions of dollars. Its portfolio is dominated by information technology, which has recently represented roughly 60% to 70% of assets. Recent top holdings have included cybersecurity and software names such as CRWD, PANW, FTNT, and DDOG, alongside semiconductor and broader technology exposure such as AMD, plus select consumer and industrial names including ROST, DASH, GOOGL, and CSX.
Because the strategy concentrates only on the strongest-momentum Nasdaq-100 constituents, its holdings and sector mix can differ sharply from the broader Nasdaq-100 and shift meaningfully at each quarterly rebalance. This concentration helps explain both the fund's pronounced upside in trending markets and its rapid downside when momentum unwinds. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
QQQA has declined approximately 15% over the trailing 30 days, falling from the low-$70s to the low-$60s. Over the trailing quarter, the fund is down roughly 14%. The decline has not been smooth: the fund traded sideways through much of September, staged a brief rebound into early October, and then sold off sharply through the second half of October in a volatility-driven, trend-reversal move rather than a gradual grind lower.
The sharp 30-day decline is consistent with a momentum-factor reversal. Momentum strategies harvest recent relative strength, which means they are structurally vulnerable when the prior market leaders—here, high-multiple technology, semiconductor, and cybersecurity names—experience a broad repricing. As growth-stock valuations compressed, the fund's concentrated technology exposure amplified the move relative to a more diversified Nasdaq-100 portfolio.
Semiconductor and software holdings, which have carried substantial weight in QQQA's portfolio, are especially sensitive to interest-rate expectations because their valuations depend heavily on future earnings. When rate-sensitive, long-duration growth assets come under pressure, a non-diversified basket of recent winners tends to underperform. The fund's small AUM and relatively high portfolio turnover can also contribute to elevated volatility during risk-off episodes. From what I see, this dynamic stands out clearly in the recent data.
The trailing-quarter decline reflects a broader rotation away from the momentum-growth leadership that had previously supported the fund. For much of the period, the information technology complex led markets higher, lifting QQQA's semiconductor-heavy portfolio. As leadership rotated and investors reassessed stretched valuations in growth technology, the fund's concentrated, equal-weighted momentum approach reversed course. The quarterly reconstitution cycle means QQQA continuously re-aligns toward the strongest recent performers, which can reinforce gains in up-trends and compound losses when those same names reverse.
Going forward, the primary factor to monitor is whether momentum leadership stabilizes or continues to rotate. Because QQQA rebalances quarterly toward the strongest Nasdaq-100 performers, the fund's composition—and therefore its risk profile—can change materially. Investors should also track interest-rate expectations and inflation data, which influence valuations for the high-multiple technology and semiconductor names that dominate the portfolio. Earnings cycles among major semiconductor, software, and cybersecurity holdings will remain important, as will broader capital flows into growth-oriented and thematic ETFs. Concentration risk and the fund's non-diversified structure are ongoing considerations, particularly during periods of elevated volatility. I’m watching this closely as the next rebalance approaches.
In my own research process, Tickeron’s AI Screener has proven useful for scanning momentum-driven ETFs like QQQA. It combines technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, price patterns, industry filters, AI-generated signals, and performance characteristics into customizable searches. This helps surface shifting sector leadership and technical trends more efficiently, which is particularly relevant when evaluating concentrated funds during periods of rotation. The platform supports monitoring how holdings compare across industries and can highlight emerging patterns in real time.
