SkyWest, Inc. is a regional airline holding company based in St. George, Utah. Its main subsidiary, SkyWest Airlines, operates scheduled passenger flights across the United States, Canada, and Mexico under the United Express, Delta Connection, American Eagle, and Alaska Airlines brands through capacity purchase and prorate agreements with larger carriers. The company also runs SkyWest Charter and SkyWest Leasing operations.
SKYW stands as the world’s largest operator of Embraer E175 aircraft, with a fleet of roughly 500 planes serving more than 240 destinations. Its model relies on long-term agreements that deliver relatively stable fee-based revenue, though the smaller prorate segment brings exposure to fuel prices and demand swings. Investors track SKYW for its fleet expansion plans, cash-flow profile, balance-sheet discipline, and buyback activity. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the last 30 days, SKYW declined approximately 15.7%, moving from $97.71 at the October 6 close to $82.41 at the November 4 close. The stock held in the $96 to $98 range through much of October before breaking lower in late October and early November.
The three-month picture shows an even steeper drop. From the mid-$110s in early August 2026, shares have fallen roughly 28% into the low $80s, well below the 52-week high of $117.72 and nearer the 52-week low of $77.89. The quarterly slide stems from a mix of softened guidance, ongoing fuel-cost pressure, and several analyst downgrades rather than any single event.
The main catalyst was SkyWest’s third-quarter 2026 earnings report, released after the close on October 29. The company reported diluted EPS of $3.08, up from $2.81 a year earlier, on revenue of about $1.12 billion, up 6% year over year. While earnings rose, revenue missed consensus estimates, and the forward outlook weighed on the results.
Management lowered its full-year 2026 EPS target to about $10.60 from roughly $11, pointing to fuel-price volatility and crew-training costs. Prorate fuel expense nearly doubled to $66 million in the quarter from $34 million a year earlier, with realized fuel at $4.56 per gallon versus prior assumptions near $3.65. For 2027, the company guided block-hour growth of only 1% to 2% and earnings roughly flat with 2026, below the mid-single-digit growth some analysts had expected.
The market reacted quickly: shares fell approximately 14.7% on October 30. That move was reinforced by analyst actions, including a Deutsche Bank downgrade to Hold from Buy with a price-target cut to $105 from $130. Earlier in October, TD Cowen had lowered its target to $116 from $123 while keeping a Buy rating, signaling a more cautious sell-side stance even before earnings.
The three-month decline reflects a shifting earnings path. At the start of the year, management’s outlook pointed to full-year EPS in the mid-$11 range; by the third-quarter report that figure had moved down to about $10.60. Rising fuel costs in the prorate business repeatedly prompted downward revisions, while management signaled it would pause prorate expansion and stay patient on adding aircraft while fuel prices remain elevated.
Part of the quarter’s reported strength came from an accounting change rather than stronger demand. SkyWest extended the estimated useful life of its E175 fleet from 22 to 30 years, which reduced depreciation expense by about $16 million in the quarter and supported EPS without reflecting better operating results. Combined with softer passenger metrics, including fewer passengers carried and a lower load factor, the quarter highlighted investor concerns about near-term earnings quality and growth pace into 2027.
Fuel prices remain the single most important variable for SKYW. Management has noted that each $1 per gallon change in prorate fuel affects EPS by roughly $1.20, making jet-fuel costs a direct driver of the outlook. Investors should also watch the pace of E175 deliveries, with 18 aircraft expected in 2027, and the rollout of the CRJ450 with United, slated to enter service before year-end.
Additional factors include the recognition of deferred revenue, expected to decline from about $100 million to about $70 million in 2027, higher depreciation expense, and an anticipated tax rate rising to 25% to 27%. Contract renewals with major partners, pilot availability, and maintenance supply-chain issues will also influence results. These should be viewed alongside broader airline demand and macroeconomic conditions.
