The SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) is managed by State Street Global Advisors and tracks the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index. Launched in January 2006, it provides exposure to U.S.-listed semiconductor firms involved in design, manufacturing, and equipment. What sets XSD apart is its modified equal-weight approach, which spreads holdings more evenly across about 44 stocks and gives mid- and small-cap names greater influence than in cap-weighted peers such as SMH or SOXX. This results in a smaller weighting to dominant players like NVDA. The structure increases sensitivity to the size factor and can lead to higher-beta moves during semiconductor rallies. The fund carries an annual expense ratio of 0.35%.
Over the past 30 days XSD fell approximately 12.8%, moving from a September 25 close of $540.74 to near $471 by late October. The fund reached a recent high above $558 on October 6 before retreating roughly 15% from that level. The three-month period showed notable swings: a sharp July drop from around $596 early in the month to about $487 by month-end, followed by an August-September recovery that pushed the fund back above $540, and then the October correction. Overall the fund is down about 4% over the trailing quarter, though it remains within a longer-term uptrend that has persisted through 2025 and much of 2026. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The decline reflected sector-wide pressures rather than any single company event. Hotter-than-expected September U.S. inflation data increased the odds of additional Federal Reserve rate hikes, which raised financing costs for debt-heavy AI infrastructure projects. Concerns about the durability of AI spending, progress by Chinese memory maker CXMT on new architectures, and elevated valuations weighed on the group. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index recorded its longest losing streak since 2008, while names such as AMD, MU, and INTC declined sharply. Because XSD’s equal-weight design emphasizes smaller, higher-beta holdings, it experienced the drawdown with less cushion from mega-cap names. From what I see, comments from Broadcom (AVGO) leadership added to the cautious tone.
The three-month period illustrated shifting sentiment. The July pullback followed profit-taking after a strong run, while the August-September rebound was driven by continued enthusiasm for AI demand. The equal-weight methodology meant mid- and small-cap names led the recovery. October’s reversal was fueled more by macroeconomic and rate concerns than by weakening fundamentals; even solid results from TSM and ASML failed to restore momentum.
Inflation data and Federal Reserve policy will remain central because higher borrowing costs directly affect the debt-funded AI trade. Earnings reports, capital-expenditure guidance, updates on Chinese competition, foundry demand signals, valuation relative to growth, and ETF flows could all influence near-term direction. These elements carry risk in both directions, and no single factor ensures a specific outcome. One thing that stands out is how quickly sentiment can shift on macro headlines.
In my own analysis I sometimes review Tickeron’s AI Trading Bots to compare automated strategies across different risk levels and timeframes. The platform offers a range of data-driven systems that can be useful when evaluating sectors like semiconductors, and I find the curated selections help narrow the choices without replacing independent judgment.
